Top Cop Says Namba’s Robbery Report Should Have Been Handled Differently

8

Acting Police Commissioner, Atlee Rodney believes the matter involving Namba’s robbery could have been dealt with differently.

Former government minister, Eleston “Namba” Adams, was the victim of a robbery by a bicycle gang on Sunday Evening and he says his effort to make a formal report to the police was denied by both the Gray’s Farm police station and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

“It is not a matter of  they not assisting him, it was just a matter of explaining to him that base on where it happened it would have been an CID matter and the CID would be the lead investigator on that. But that doesn’t prevent Gray’s Farm from assisting with the report, so it is an unfortunate situation that he felt like they were refusing him but they were just explaining to him that it is for CID to investigate but we will assist.” Rodney explained.

Rodney also added that the police has a good lead of who the perpetrators are based on the information provided by Adams.

Addressing Adams’ concerns of the back and forth between departments, Rodney says he is trying to change the culture of the police force to allow citizens to be able to make one call or one visit regardless of the jurisdiction.

  1. Picky head Antigua people can’t get no justice under this ALP government. The officer who sent him away should be suspended.

  2. Thankfully Namba was not hurt. Is he done with elective politics? Is he still a member of the UPP? Will it be Namba or Driftwood for that constituency?

  3. CULTURAL STUPIDITY – HELPLESS EXPLANATIONS AND LAME EXCUSES

    There are several things those who have fallen victims to the criminal elements are not interested in.

    Among them are;

    (i) …Helpless Explanations;

    (ii) …Lame Excuses; and

    (iii) …Cultural Stupidity.’

    Put into perspective, victims of crime are;

    (a) …Not interested in the way the ‘…Police administration divides its Police District’ [Paragraph 3];

    (b) …Not interested in what ‘Culture’ has been developed and practiced among rank and file members; and

    (c) …Not interested in’ Lame Excuses,’ neither from ‘…Precinct commanders, nor him that has responsibility for superintendence of the Police Service.’

    Victims of crime are interested only in;

    (i) ‘…Quick response;

    (ii) …Positive and professional approach; and

    (iii) …Decisive action.’

    These shall be inculcated in the minds of the personnel.

    That which may have been ‘…indirectly acknowledged by Commissioner Atlee Rodney’ who speaks to ‘…offering explanation’ suggest clearly that the ‘…Grays Farm Police Station had been laying wager (hedging) with the Criminal Investigations Department (CID).’

    Such ‘…apparent wagering,’ affects the credibility of the Police Service and those who have subscribed to the Oath of Office to ‘…Protect and Serve.’

    Each officer’s ‘…Status, Powers and Duties are contained in the Police Act’ [Chapter 330: Sections 18, 19, 20 and 22 and 23]. Check for personal knowledge.

    From professional ‘…knowledge, experience and management,’ there is no ‘…Royal Police Force of Grays Farm.’

    Conversely, there is no ‘…Royal Criminal Investigation Department of Antigua and Barbuda.’
    Got the message?

    Mr. Byam scores ‘…half of a point,’ particularly for the last line in his comment.

    Commissioner Atlee Rodney therefore, may wish not to be heard as only merely saying he is ‘…trying’ to change an apparent endemic culture, but also to be ‘…forceful and decisive’ in bringing about such ‘…cultural change.’

  4. @ Mr. Byam .You are correct. And from Atlee s response we can see why the culture is the way it is , it starts from the top. His response epitomized the culture of the force where the first response is to get rid of the nuisances disturbing their peace, domino or video game and provide lame excuses a la Pompey.

    On Facebook there are no less than a dozen or so incidences where citizens reported matters to the police and were brushed off or ignored. Neither Atlee or the force has responded to any of them despite having a Facebook page.

    Atlee should be fired along with the officers who took Nambas call. Fullstop. The only way you change culture is to hold people accountable and from Atlee non response he is is no position to do so.

  5. Chups aru min dey a celebrate when them throw out Wendell now y’all bellyaching and crying bout Atlee. When aru go see Atlee nah k bout nobody but he self old people does say aru no who aru min hab but aru nah know who aru ah get maybe if Wendell min dey Namba would ah get he justice

  6. The more I read about the ABPF, the more I realise they are akin to Keystone Cops!

    If I report a crime at a police station, I expect the officer that I contact to take a full statement and then pass that onto the appropriate internal department to be pushed forward for investigation. The complainant should not have to go to any other officer, other than the first officer contacted, and the acting commissioner needs to take more responsibility. It’s not a case that ‘it could have been dealt with differently’ but that it SHOULD have been handled differently.

  7. Mr. Byam

    Why you must blame the ALP ? You Guys bring politics into everything. Wait until you have the opportune time to talk politics. ALP administration will be in office for a very long time. Therefore you have lots of blaming to do. Do not get tired.
