UPDATE: a previous version of this article identified the robbery victim as a tourist. Police have since confirmed that the victim was a local tour operator.

A tour guide was reportedly robbed and carjacked Wednesday afternoon after taking cruise ship visitors to swim at Deep Bay.

Reports are that the man ran to the beach where a boatload of tourists on a Catamaran cruise were located, in order to get help.

He reportedly explained that he was held at gunpoint and the truck he was driving was taken by the gunmen. Reports are the bandits stuck a firearm to the tourist’s head and attempted to kidnap him.

News of the incident is making the rounds on social media with people commenting that Deep Bay is a hot spot for criminal elements.

Persons have also questioned why the authorities do not have an active police presence in the area, or erect surveillance cameras there.

Some have expressed fear that these rogue elements could do some harm to persons visiting our shores.

Tourism officials have been jubilant thus far for the winter tourist season as several cruise ships have docked at our ports on a weekly basis. Reports are that five ships are docked in St John’s today. Deep Bay is a popular tourist beach.

YOU ALL HAVE TO DO BETTER

  3. Main reason why I no longer go to deep bay. minister of tourism, public safety and commissioner of police. This needs to be fixed.

  4. Sad thing is this is such a nice spot and beach. I too have stopped going there because of the robberies I’ve heard that have becoming popular in the spot. The police needs to up their game with surveying this. Its a sad day in ANU when you cant even visit a damn beach in broad daylight because you are afraid of being robbed.

  5. Yup, same, I just stopped going there after reports of robberies at gunpoint. With Royal Antiguan being upgraded and a new property being developed at Yeptons, this needs to be dealt with soon otherwise it may get ugly.
