Last week, one of our indigenous & reputable companies, The Antigua & Barbuda Social Security Board, celebrated its 50th year Anniversary of existence.
Throughout its 50 yrs of operation, it has served the people of this nation with pride & distinction, inspite of the challenges it has been faced with, over the years.
The establishment has met & will continue to meet its mandate of supplying the financial needs to its beneficiaries especially, to those persons who may no longer have another source of income to rely on.
For me, there are many lessons that can be learnt from the role of Social Security. One of those lesson is the importance of PLANTING A SEED TODAY SO THAT IT WILL PROVIDE FOR YOUR TOMORROW.
As a result of the theme this poem was penned to express my sentiments
As I think about the role of Social Security
Their anniversary theme keeps ringing in my ear.
” Plant a seed today will provide for our tomorrow ”
Will benefit each one of us, if we really care.
For a while, I will confess that the profound theme had me thinking
So, I paused for a few and pray.
Immediately, an answer popped up infront of me
About the importance to prepare for that rainy day.
As a follow up, I decided to seek an opinion,
So, I asked a friend for their comment.
I was reminded that we are all aging
Therefore, it is crucial to plan for retirement.
Instantly, the value of Social Security then came to mind,
Whose mandate is to offer a protection.
It offers financial benefits to the insured employee
who has duly paid their contribution.
Interestingly, the Benefits that the indigenous institution offers,
Covers sickness, maternity and funerals, just to name a few
It also covers pensions, such as Age and Invalidity
And even Survivors too.
Therefore, it is critical to prepare for that rainy day
So later on, you will have no regrets or sorrow.
Because, taking heed to the thought of “Planting a seed today
Will definitely provide for you tomorrow”.

This is so profound! The writer hit the nail on the head. Many persons face find themselves in difficulties in the latter stage of their lives because they did not prepare themselves for their retirement. Thank God for Social Security but it should not be the only program to depend on. We need to save & invest now for our future also.
