Antigua and Barbuda is currently under an Excessive Heat Watch as forecasters warn that the heat index could reach or exceed 38 °C (100 °F).

The watch is in effect from 10am to 4pm until Friday, due to light winds and elevated humidity levels contributing to dangerously hot conditions.

According to meteorological officials, “The combination of high temperatures and humidity may lead to excessive heat levels, particularly affecting sensitive groups.”

The watch indicates that conditions are favourable for an excessive heat event within the next 24 to 72 hours, although the precise timing remains uncertain.

Health risks associated with extreme heat are notably higher for vulnerable populations, including the elderly, young children, lactating mothers, and individuals with chronic illnesses such as heart conditions and respiratory issues.

“Heat-related illnesses, such as heat stroke and exhaustion, can be severe and even life-threatening,” the advisory warned.

Residents are advised to take precautions, including staying hydrated and checking on vulnerable family members, friends, and neighbours.

Symptoms of heat-related illness can include dizziness, nausea, rapid heartbeat, and extreme thirst. If anyone exhibits severe symptoms, such as confusion or loss of consciousness, it is crucial to seek immediate medical attention by calling 911.

Local authorities are urging everyone to remain vigilant during this period of extreme heat.

“We encourage everyone to stay cool, stay hydrated, and take the necessary steps to protect themselves and their loved ones,” officials emphasized. (LOOP NEWS)
