TEACHERS UNION ACCUSED OF PLAYING POLITICS.

The Antigua and Barbuda Union of Teachers has been accused of playing politics with the education of our students in Antigua and Barbuda.  In a letter received in our newsroom, the President of the Union of Teachers, Mr. Casroy Charles indicated that they will engage in industrial action on Monday February 13th 2023 and will maintain this posture if the Ministry Of Education fails to engage the Executive of the Antigua and Barbuda Union of Teachers on February 13th 2023.

According to the letter sent to the Minister of Education, the issues that the ABUT wishes to address are:

  • Schools Security (Quality and Quantity)
  • Teachers Upgrades
  • Heads of Department Honorarium / Ex-gratia payment
  • Negotiations for the 2018-2020 Collective Bargaining Agreement

In response to the issues above, our newsroom has been reliably informed of the following:

  1. The information regarding security has sent to the ABUT is attached below

  1. Of the 326 teachers eligible for upgrades, 301 of the upgrades have been completed and the remaining are in progress

  1. Thirty-four (34) vouchers for HOD / Ex-gratia payments have been prepared by the Ministry of Education and are currently awaiting payment in the Treasury

  1. The negotiations for the 2018-2020 CBA has been ongoing with the ABUT and a recommendation is being sent to the Cabinet for approval

We have been advised that the Ministry of Education, on Friday, invited the Executive of the ABUT to a meeting on Monday February 13th 2023, and this invitation was accepted by the ABUT.

Following the acceptance of the invitation to meet, the following message was sent by the ABUT:

In light of the above, the Ministry of Education is surprised that the Executive of the ABUT has once again written to its membership advising them to take industrial action on Monday.   The ABUT has told its membership to engage in a sit-in, until they have been advised that the meeting scheduled for 11:00am on Monday has started.

The result of this “Sit-in” is that the children will be left totally unsupervised until at least 11:00am while the teachers await word that the meeting has commenced.

  1. If you were really concerned about the “children “ you would have resolved this issue with the teachers in a timely manner. Instead you prove yourself so untrustworthy that the teachers are forced to sit in in order to ensure you keep your word and actually meet when you say you will. In fact the students should join the teachers in their sit because they are all fighting for the same thing

  2. Because the Politicians say so,do not make it so. The Teachers like all others have rights. If they feel their rights are not being addressed. They should stand up and be counted. In Antigua we believe everything those lying arses of Politicians tell us.Many of us could see things for ourselves and figured them out. We do not need Politicians to tell us anything.

  4. I back the teachers all the way in this dispute, and remember it’s not all about an increase in salary – though important!

Our teachers have way way more intelligence than any of our current politicians.

At least a maths teacher has the correct qualification in mathematics to teach, and I’m 100% sure that a teacher that is employed in scientific and technology matters has an appropriate (BSc) degree as well.

Whereas, our politicians can move around in cabinet positions without the necessary ‘academic tools’ to do their job properly for the betterment of Antiguans.

Yes, it’ll be a lot more difficult now that Gaston’s won the election, and it is more than likely he’ll revert back to type, however, do not give in, our children’s future education is in your very capable hands.

  5. INDUSTRIAL ACTION IS THE ONLY LANGUAGE POLITICIANS UNDERSTAND AND OVERSTAND. TELLING TEACHERS THAT VOUCHERS ARE AT THE TREASURY DOESN’T HELP…CUSTOMS OFFICERS HAVE VOUCHERS THERE SINCE 2019. CUSTOMS PLEASE TAKE NOTE AND COME OUT OF YOUR PUPPETIZED SHELL. ABPSA TAKE NOTE. PWA TAKE NOTE. CANIVAL SERVICE PROVIDERS TAKE.

INDUSTRIAL ACTION IS THE ONLY LANGUAGE POLITICIANS UNDERSTAND AND OVERSTAND.

  6. How is this playing politics? This is the lame excuse that politicians, especially ALP and those in charge use to appear relevant. Education in Antigua and Barbuda has been deteriorating for a long time as has society, and to me, Claire Brown and those in this ministry have been antiquated and without ideas for a long time.
If the safety of our children and teachers is not serious, then I don’t know what is.

  7. So sad as soon as people stand up for something they are playing politics, so sad what world are we living in. So teachers or no one should talk up when things going wrong?
