Steadroy Benjamin Signals One Last Election Run, Praises New Minister Shenella Govia

Acting Prime Minister Steadroy Benjamin announced today that he plans to contest one more election, underscoring his faith in the next generation of leaders within Antigua and Barbuda. Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony of Shenella Govia as the new Minister of State in Education, Benjamin reflected on his own political journey and expressed pride in seeing young leaders stepping up.

“This is a day that the Lord has made, so let’s rejoice and be glad in it,” he said. “Today, my heart is full of pride, admiration, and love for you, Shenella, my dear friend.” Benjamin lauded Govia’s dedication and commitment, declaring that she represents a new wave of leadership poised to take Antigua and Barbuda forward.

He continued by pointing to other young leaders such as David Matthew, Maria Browne, and Michael Joseph, describing them as part of the Labour Party’s commitment to nurturing the future of the nation. Benjamin’s words echoed the mentorship he received early in his career when he was guided into parliamentary service in 1981 by influential figures, a journey he hopes Govia and her peers will now embark on.

Reflecting on his own path, he shared, “Some of us, you see, will contest the elections one more time. So when we leave the scene after that one time, I am confident that the Labour Party and the government will be in great, great, great hands.”

In a heartfelt moment, Benjamin recited lines from Rudyard Kipling’s famous poem “If,” offering Govia advice on leadership and resilience. “If you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs and blaming it on you… If you can dream and not make dreams your master,” he quoted, emphasizing the importance of balance and strength in public life.

  1. While the Attorney General Steadroy Benjamin quotes “English” journalist Rudyard Kipling, here’s a quote by the great civil rights activist W.E.B DuBois that perfectly sums up the current problems and predicaments right here in Antigua & Barbuda:

“To be a poor man is hard, but to be a poor race in the land of dollars is the very bottom of hardships”

W.E.B DuBois was way ahead of his time.

  3. ABLP definitely understands the importance of SUCCESSION PLANNING.

Can’t say the same for Mr. Pringle and his party

  4. Telling young people “I can not help you” when they are trying to do big things to help the nation and visitors is nurturing? Being spiteful is nurturing? Not putting those positions they have advance degrees in is nurturing? Ignoring the cries of those who aim high and succeed when aiming high is nurturing?

For this year, I helped numerous Antiguans get US immigration status to get correct medical care because they were misdiagnosed, almost fatally, by Mount St. JOHNS MEDICAL CENTER IN ANTIGUA AND BARBUDA.

One just called me yesterday, mount st johns said it was not cancerous. Weeks after, she has cancer where they said she had none. Is this nurturing too? Not giving the young people access to a high standard of care medical professionals?
