Early Thursday morning, between 2 and 3 a.m., a series of break-ins occurred at several stores on Redcliffe and High Streets in St. John’s.
The intruders gained entry by forcing open the front doors. On Redcliffe Street, Party Paradise and Greater Gold Beauty Plus were among the targeted businesses, later finding their cash registers abandoned behind the nearby Subway restaurant.
The incidents have left the store owners in shock, with one describing the boldness of the crime as deeply troubling. Meanwhile, at Ceco Pharmacy on High Street, surveillance footage captured a thief breaking in through a window.

HIRE PROPER SECRURITY!!!! Tap play cheap!!!!
@me done talk,
You know this also speak volume about the lack of policing. At this stage criminals should be fearful of breaking into buildings but they are not seeing police, the police is not using proper tactics to show presence. That many modern law burglary in one night? This only shows incompetence for those of us in the field that can properly make assessments. They literally are confident no police will ever be present.
Experts in the field will come up with tactics that confuses criminals, make them less confident. Give me 6 months in charge of the police.
@my way of helping
they can do the robberies when the police done patrol – not so? maybe u have the mechanism that can read criminal minds to alert you exactly when and where they plan to rob?
@me done talk. The big picture of the problem that we are facing in Antigua doesn’t boil down to hiring security and being cheap. Let us look at the larger picture. One of organized robberies, petty and serious crimes. One of defying authorities and in the process creating fear and concern and as a result seriously trying to affect our economy. Destabilizing and escalating a war against authorities which at the same time raises doubts about who or what is really behind all this. It is serious people and government, really serious and you know what?, don’t blame ‘the youth’ – some are also victims and the ones been used for established and clear purposes… It is time to really go deep and all-out with recurring to international anti-crime experienced groups to tackle this as quickly as possible and before it reaches the desire threshold of those involved. Can we all see this? Can we all at least raise our voices within the different circles we move in? What is happening here in tiny Antigua will percolate into other islands and the region, if if not addressed with the speed and urgency required. Please don’t bring experts from another island with all due respect, but you know exactly dear government who has to be brought in ASAP. It has been done in the past for lesser problems than these ones. Please do it now. Our children are going back to school and our high tourism and sales seasons are around the corner, not to mention the joyous Christmas time. ALL INVOLVED, PLEASE ACT MORE FORCIBLY NOW!! Well funded organize group with a clear agenda is among us, present in Antigua….. with young and imported population being utilized. Thank you for reading, but action is needed from all of us, even in small ways. Include prayers 🙏☮️💟🇦🇬
Policing here in Antigua should be a 24/7 profession and not a 9 to 5 job. Prime Minister Browne, you must implement round the clock security Policing immediately; and create a much needed fear factor to protect our local business community.
Look man, you pulled out all the stops for Covid-19 with police and the black-shirted military against innocent women and children (including the use of teargas).
WHY NOT THE SAME FOR CRIMINALS?
WELL SAID Lynn and Brixtonian.
It is not about being psychic, it is about setting policing presence that makes it hard for criminals. As the way they act, criminals, it is like they know when police will be present and they have no fear of being apprehended. So, it is time policing are used that is spread across the country and 24/7.
I believe a well thought out strategy should be employed to do this. It has nothing to do with psychic powers but utilizing experts and pragmatic understand of the situation.
What we might be witnessing is a bunch of people who are just bent on creating chaos in the country. I bet this is a small group, the same people who were successful in previous thefts so this has now become a trade and a job for them. They look for easy targets and pounce on them. There is no easy fix to this but we must all work together as a unit to eradicate them them our society.
While I don’t always agree with Brixtonian, he is right here. The criminals must be licking their lips knowing they have a free buffet table to feast from when the sun goes down.
Recently, I heard from two business owners that feel threatened with an overnight break-in, have been sleeping onsite armed and hopefully ready to combat any unauthorized entry. While risky, these individuals have said they have to take action because of their location in town and because the police don’t seem to be making any progress.
I agree with Audley Phillip. This is not a case of 50 different people committing 50 different crimes. More like 5 different groups each committing 10 different crimes. They got away with there first and it looks easy so they continue to do it.
For all those who believes they can do a better job than Mr. Rodney. Try Jamaica, try Trinidad. Oh, ok they are big islands. So try St. Kitts, Try St. Lucia, try St. Vincent. Last time i check they had more of a crime problem than us.
I agree that break ins and burglaries are related to poverty. I have sat in court and see that most of the persons on these charges are young unemployed persons. Check crime stats in rich countries vs those of poor countries.
In the 80’s in the US, many Police Chiefs lost there jobs because of the crime wave. At the same time the prisons were more than full. Years later it was aknowledge that the police were not at fault. Crack Cocaine was the issue
Poverty is related to crime.

Let us judge the police on unsolved crime rate. We do not have enough police to guard all the Businesses in Antigua.
If Police guard Epicurean thieves target Gloria”s Supermarket. Guard Gloria”s thieves move to Pops mini market in Village.
Some of us are silent like a lamb when nothing in the news. But crime in news. “AHA, I am right. I told you so. Hire me. I am the only one in the world and universe who can tackle crime.
Talking much and saying very little.
With little resource, everything must ne done strategically. It is not happening here. No matter what nonsense misunderstanding and misinterpretation of research they do. Police can not be everywhere but they can certainly be strategic. The island is too small for this to be happening. St. John is too small.
If properly scheduling for officers and proper presence in communities are made with whatever police officers are available, burglary would not ne occurring nearly every single night, or often enough where you can literally predict tonight it is happening.
No matter what ignorant folks say about a field they have no clue about, ignore it, and know daily, you can make it better.
@BJ… You brought up some good points. As bad as things are in Antigua, they could be a lot worse. For example, St. Kitts and Nevis have had 26 murders this year (31 last year). The Turks and Caicos Islands have had at least 19 murders. Both of their populations are half of what Antigua has. The entire region is dealing with an increase in crime and Antigua was never going to be immune from it.
If you are a Prime Minister, AG, COP, Deputy COP, etcetera and inherently dangerous crimes are being committed with this frequency, in this small island, mainly by “children/youth” and you are literally saying you have no fault and that is not a sign of incompetence, then, if you think that way is one of the above here, you truly do not deserve that position.
You think the frequency and the kind of crimes in a small island does not show impotence? You literally going to justify these crimes with Crack cocaine that hardly exist in the country and not with criminals seeing the opportunity to commit crimes exist with little chance of being apprehended because the police are unable to use effective policing?
Police and government are at substantial fault. I will not say community is not responsible too but this is a clear sign of incompetence at the helm.
Like the blogger said in competent countries, the chief of police and those at the helm are fired or resigned, even when they attempt to say it is not their fault. Try that in Antigua and stop justifying that experts has no use so that your friends can continue getting jobs without the requisite advance knowledge.
The criminals are laughing at all the proposed, preposterous ideas of fighting crime by showing us they don’t give two shits about them. I’ll bet these break-ins weren’t done by anyone under 18 yrs. And, it’ll a miracle if these culprits are ever apprehended. Perhaps the owners of these businesses should consider pooling some resources and hire a couple of overnight security persons. And, 🇦🇬’s government ought to grant these guards firearm licenses.
Business owners, please install sensor cameras and security systems. The cameras would notify you. When someone is within a certain feet of your business.Your security system would notify you and the police if an intruder is trying to break into your business. The Police when then go your businesses to check around and investigate. You have to protect your assets.Installed the systems Apps on your phone.
It is really sad and pathetic that people think no one in this world can do better than those in charge. That is so sad and brainwashed. Incompetence.
Everybody know the thieves,is easy to recognize this piece of human garbage…so,if you want a prompt response from the 12 hours ( daytime securities forces) white powder is the most desire intervention this unruly servants want attended, the rest, their don’t care..
