Seven Young Ladies Compete for the Title of Labour Queen in Antigua’s Annual Pageant

Tonight, the annual Labour Queen Pageant will take place at the Dean William Lake Cultural Centre, featuring seven young ladies as contestants.

This event is a collaborative effort between the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party and the Antigua Trades and Labour Union, held in honor of Labour Day, a holiday for workers celebrated on the first Monday of May each year.

The competition consists of five categories, including evening wear, question and answer, performing talent, swimwear, and introduction.

The contestants are Denesha Samuel (Miss St. Mary’s South), Cariesa Corbett (Miss St. John’s City West), Teresha Nanton (Miss St. John’s City South), Cassie Vitalis (Miss St. Mary’s North), Delekah Weste (Miss St. Paul), Me-kesha Browne (Miss St. John’s Rural North), and Lynnique Stanislaus (Miss St. John’s Rural South).

This year’s winner will receive a top prize of $4,000, and for the first time, all seven contestants will be granted scholarships to pursue higher education.

The Labour Queen Pageant has served as a stepping stone for many young ladies seeking to participate in other pageants, such as the Queen of Carnival show, which is part of Antigua’s annual Carnival celebrations. Numerous past Carnival Queens have begun their journey in the Labour Queen pageant.

Marsh and Marsh Productions, co-led by Brucella Marsh-Sutton and Shane Marsh, will produce the show.

  1. Isn’t this kind of competition sexist, especially for a so called workers party and a trade union federation, who should be at the forefront of fighting for women’s rights, including against the objectification of women. swimwear? really?
