Retired Politician Hugh Marshall Senior said that he appreciated being made Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (CBE) but he would have preferred being accorded a national award.

Marshall is one of two people that Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II approved for awards from Antigua and Barbuda in her 2021 New Year’s Honours List.

“I’m honoured that I have been chosen for it”, Marshall told state media but added, “I won’t wear it on my sleeves, I hope that what it can do is to motivate others to know that if Marshall who (didn’t have any shoes to wear to school) can reach there, (I) can reach there and pass that.”

The retired politician served Antigua and Barbuda as a Parliamentary Secretary from 1976 – 1980.

In 1980, he was elected to the lower house as the Member of Parliament for the Constituency of St. Mary’s South and was appointed as a Minister of Government in the Antigua Labour Party government until 1994.

“I think I would have felt better if this honour came from a different source”, Marshall said adding, “ a prophet has no honour in his own country”.

He, however, thanked the government for nominating him for this award.

The Office of the Governor General said in a press release that Marshall was responsible for the inclusion of a clause in the Constitution of Antigua and Barbuda to enable the transfer of citizenship to grandchildren.

He was also credited for the development of a number of major tourism properties that are still thriving and the introduction of the State Insurance Corporation and the OECS Stock Market.

As Minister of Trade, Marshall led the charge in establishing Antigua and Barbuda’s first Industrial Park and was instrumental in producing Antigua and Barbuda’s largest quantum of non-sugar exports to date.

Honours are usually awarded by Her Majesty The Queen on her New Year’s and Birthday List to 15 Commonwealth Nations, including Antigua and Barbuda on the advice of the Government.

The other honouree is Canadian John Michael Petrie, who received the Order of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE) for services to Antigua & Barbuda.
