Prime Minister Highlights Senator Lamin Newton’s Appointment and Focus on Youth Development

Prime Minister Gaston Browne has lauded the appointment of Lamin Newton as Senator, describing it as a recognition of his dedication and self-improvement.

Speaking on the “Browne and Browne Show,” the Prime Minister praised Newton’s contributions to the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP) since 2018, underscoring his growth and commitment to the party’s principles.

Newton, who joined the ABLP without making demands, was acknowledged for his advocacy on platforms such as Point FM and his decision to pursue higher education at the University of the West Indies Five Islands Campus. Prime Minister Browne noted that Newton is nearing the completion of his degree, calling his academic achievements “remarkable.”

Addressing critics who questioned the appointment, Browne dismissed claims that Newton’s promotion was unmerited, citing his years of dedication and active involvement in the party.

“What this has shown is that when you join the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party, you are encouraged to get involved in self-development,” Browne stated.

The Prime Minister used the occasion to reiterate the ABLP’s focus on fostering youth leadership and succession planning.

He pointed out that many young individuals who supported the party leading up to the 2014 elections have pursued significant academic and professional accomplishments, including doctoral degrees. Browne also noted the party’s strategy of appointing younger individuals to key roles, including board positions and candidatures, as part of a long-term vision to ensure continuity.

Browne assured supporters that the ABLP prioritizes investing in its youth members, contrasting this approach with other political entities that he accused of sidelining their supporters.

“We are not seeking to use people as political pawns,” he remarked, emphasizing the party’s commitment to empowering its members.

The Prime Minister also reflected on his own journey as a young politician, noting the importance of preparing the next generation to sustain the party’s leadership.

He reaffirmed his commitment to creating opportunities for youth and fostering a culture of self-development within the party.

  1. If you want to be financially successful in the ALP, just become a member or a close associate of the UPP and cuss out Gaston; not necessarily the Labour Party, and you are good to go. To him, his tarnished image is secondary only to his love and desire for enrichment. The good thing is; not everyone in the UPP thinks that lowly of himself.

  2. Gaston, could you tell the public who is the person you were publicly referring to some years ago when you said ‘they are known to the Office of National Drug and Money Laundering Control Policy (O.N.D.C.P.)’.

  3. “The Prime Minister used the occasion to reiterate the ABLP’s focus on fostering youth leadership and succession planning”.

Really? This is the future of the A.B.L.P.?

Samantha Marshall gal. You right fu run early and bright.

  4. The ABLP’s emphasis on nurturing its members’ personal development is commendable Senator Newton’s rise to the Senate serves as a great example of how the party invests in its people, offering them the tools to succeed both academically and professionally

  5. That’s what you see in the PM? well you dead wrong!! You may not like this man, but i think he is one the best coming from this island. It will be very difficult to find another independent like him, very difficult. Anyone that tries to develop and encourage other to develop themselves is A keeper and we should be thankful for having him at this time.

  6. Huh, so you reward someone for cussing UPP on radio, oh ok. That’s why he and 2 locks get in the senate? I thought being a parliamentarian was serious business.

  7. While it’s nice that the ABLP claims to focus on personal development there’s little evidence to show that this truly benefits the broader population It’s more about advancing individual careers rather than fostering genuine growth for all smh

  8. Damn if you do damn if you don’t, Our PM is a visionary and he is no jokie Poltican he said it over and over if you want to build your Country regardless of which party you are serving and wants to join the ABLP you are welcome and more shall follow young qualified men with an ambition for politics will follow his lead the old dumb dumbs with anger, resentment and hatred can keep cursing him for his good deeds and building the ABLP and he is determined to do so because he knows unlike others it’s a win win when elections are called he has a pool of political talent to choose from that would beat any opposition with the same breath he is showing the opposition support that he cares and is only looking to develop his Country and would win most of them over in the end its like when the Hon Laming comes over he brings 500 supporters with him that is succes for the ABLP

  9. While I can commend the PM for his emphasis on youth development, there is little evidence of that for the average folks in antigua. He talks about UWI but only a select few get scholarships. Indeed, why Mr Newton get a scholarship like the chairman stated when by all means and purpose he has a Labour party job, no children (dependents) and is self sufficient. Why not give scholarships to those who truly cannot afford it. People are so disenfranchised with the political Machinations that each election cycle you see more and more people not participate. The fact of the matter is Lamin will not be voted into parliament, so being a senator is the closest he will come. I listen to him on radio the other day condescendingly talking down to Shugy, and I thought to myself, Lamin does not even have a regress..the most unqualified politician on in antigua. To be qualified you must be votable and the PM must not have a grasp of the sentiment mr Newton elicits in the average voters

  10. Top Dawg benefit from a weak opposition, god knows if the opposition party was strong we would be better off, to top dog speak sometimes you wonder where he live cause so many people struggling in Antigua

  11. Lamin has proven his loyalty, his lack of fear when he defends the ABLP and his ability. Senators Shoul, O’Neal, Frederick’s and Turner are always willing to publicly promote and defend the party. The same can’t be said for all the others that have been appointed Senators and Parliamentary Secretaries and Chair of Boards and Board Members. My advice to the PM is that we do not need people who are not willing to publicly stand up and want to remain hail fellows well met to everyone. Some of them are drawing salaries for doing nothing. Dear PM you need to appoint people with cojones – people who are not afraid to stand up.
