Opposition Leader Jamale Pringle says the United Progressive Party’s Senate appointments have already received strong public support, expressing confidence that the party’s new senators will serve Antigua and Barbuda with distinction.
Speaking during Monday’s swearing-in ceremony at Government House, Pringle said the appointments had been “well received by the public.”
“Our senators are assured of widespread support already,” Pringle said. “The United Progressive Party and I have the utmost confidence in their abilities and in their commitment to the business of state.”

Pringle congratulated newly sworn-in senators Chester Hughes, Jonathan Wehner and Ashworth Azille while outlining the experience and qualities each would bring to the Upper House.
He described Senator Chester Hughes as “a political veteran,” “a seasoned parliamentarian” and “an unwavering trade unionist advocating for the working class.”
Pringle also praised Hughes as “a student of law,” pointing to his long involvement in public life and labour representation.
Turning to Senator Jonathan Wehner, Pringle described the young senator as “a young man with an old head on his shoulder” and “a gifted communicator.”
He said Wehner serves as “an example for our youth” and someone young people in Antigua and Barbuda “can be proud of.”
Pringle also commended Senator Ashworth Azille, who he said had been described as “our Martin Luther King,” praising him as another advocate for workers and “a veteran educator with deep commitment to his adopted country.”
The Opposition Leader also addressed the absence of Opposition Senator-designate Malaka Parker, explaining that she had travelled on family business and would take her oath at a later date.
Pringle said Parker is nearing completion of a law degree and has served in government, the trade union movement and the private sector.
“She will continue to stand as a model of achievement for our women and girls,” he said.
Pringle ended his remarks by encouraging the senators to carry “the mantle of our great institution proudly and well,” adding: “Our democracy is counting on you.”

Definitely not well received by any of the LOSERS who signed that letter of support for Richard Lewis.
When you keep telling yourself that you are doing a great job, that means things will never get better. There are two picks that I can agree with. Jonathan Wehner and Ashworth Azille. Chester has no business of being in the Upper House again. He was once a parliamentarian already. UPP needs people that will be care takers of constituencies. The Senate would be their training ground to debate bill. He must realize that the AYE’s have it with every bill. So no matter how good Chester Hughes and Malaka Parker debate it doesn’t matter. Bill will pass the Lower House and come for rubber stamp in the Upper House. That is why I find the Upper House a waste of time. But that is our system of government. Try find something better. We have seen the faults of the US System. Congress deadlock over everything. And Republicans just support their president no matter what. So the best of two evil is the one we have I guess.
If I was a UPP supporter I would be wondering if Pringle is a double agent purposely sinking UPP so that ABLP can remain in power….Maybe he secretly gets a cheque and just keeps up the image and says what the supporters wanna hear….rubs chin…..hmmmmmmm…….
@ Less We Forget I agree with you that Chester and Azille should not be in the Senate. Instead of Chester if they must have someone from the AWU why didn’t they put young Edgehill. Putting Chester in the Senate is like putting Harold Lovell. Their time have passed. Instead of Azille I would put Franz and Adrian Williams for Malaka. Who are their advisors?
Which public, not the same public I interact with daily
Chester is the Union factor In the Senate. Just like David Massiah did. The UPP has always put a Union person to defend worker’s right in the Senate. That’s all!!!
Nutten tarl go so. Chester and Malaka washed up, Azille gave the UPP government hell as Teacher Union President, Young Johnathan is the bright spark. Talking to you colleagues in your small circle does not speak for the general public because I’ve heard different from a wide cross section of society. Therein lies the UPP Problems
The “public?” Which public he talking about? Must be the 5 people that comment on ANR under 9999999 monikers. Just chupzzzz.
