Lionel Hurst, Chief of Staff in the Office of the Prime Minister, has indicated interest from potential buyers for the Alfa Nero.
The vessel was moved from Falmouth today to remove barnacles, a routine maintenance exercise. Hurst mentioned, “We do have interest from some buyers. We want to announce it because we don’t want to spook anyone.”
The Alfa Nero has been docked in Falmouth Harbour for nearly two years, raising environmental and security concerns, especially after Andrey Guryev, a close associate of Russian President Vladimir Putin, was sanctioned following the 2022 Ukraine invasion.
A 2023 auction saw legal disputes lead to the withdrawal of Eric Schmidt’s highest bid of US$67 million.
Maintenance costs for the Alfa Nero, amounting to US$28,000 weekly from the Citizenship by Investment fund, highlight the urgency of finding a buyer.
