Political Hopeful Proposes Street Renaming to Honor the Legacy of Late Police Commissioner
*
Community advocate Jermaine N. Edwards from St. John’s Rural South speaks highly of the late Ms. Delano Christopher, former Police Commissioner who passed away on Feb 11th. As the first female police commissioner in the Caribbean, Christopher’s unwavering dedication to the Royal Police Force of Antigua and Barbuda (RPFAB) and her community and nation were recognized with her promotion to the position of Commissioner and the conferral of the Queen’s Police Medal (QPM).
Having grown up in the St. John’s Rural South community, Ms. Christopher left a lasting impact and garnered the respect of everyone, especially the youth. Her example inspired me to dedicate my life to public service and pursue studies in criminal justice.
I still remember the time when I got lost at Carnival City as a youngster, and Ms. Christopher recognized me and safely returned me to my parents. Her presence as a female officer made me feel at ease and sparked my interest in law enforcement. Female officers were not common then, and she seemed like a giant to me. I once said, “Female police officers tend to have a positive influence on the perceived job performance, trustworthiness, and fairness of a police agency. In many cases, they influence the public’s willingness to cooperate in the production of positive public safety outcomes.”
I am proposing that American Road, where the police headquarters is situated be renamed to honor her legacy. “At a time when youth violence is at an all-time high, we must memorialize Ms. Christopher’s legacy and the contributions that she made at the community, national, and regional level.”
Ms. Christopher is remembered as someone who was trusted by her community, which translated into more effective community policing strategies, especially in addressing conflicts and conflict resolution strategies with the youth and adults alike.
Despite some progress in hiring over the past 20 years, women are still significantly underrepresented in policing. I believe that more efforts should be made to improve the gender balance. I suggest that targeted recruitment strategies emphasizing the service aspects of policing may help inspire more women to join the police force.
One simple encounter. One positive moment can make a life-altering difference in a person’s life. Ms. Delano Christopher was that encounter for me and many others like me, and we are eternally grateful.

That’s true BUT why wasn’t that done b4 her death why is after death WE LOVE GIVE FLOWERS JUS HER BEING THE 1st Female Commissioner alone was enough
I guess politriks she probably ddnt serve in Gaston time so PAPA BIRD …. Lester Bird SHOULD HAVE DONE IT
BUT THATS A GOOD IDEA
She became commissioner in UPP time and they fired her shortly after and replaced her with a retired YHTE CANADIAN MOUNTEE. Talking to a few of my police friends and they all said the same thing she was the WORST commissioner of Police but I disagree cause nobody can do worst that this present one😅
@Black Hypocrisy.
She was fired for poor performance. Baldwin Spencer acted like a real leader and did what he thought the right thing to do. Was she worse than the present incumbent? She would have had to strain herself to the limit to be any worse. Crime is spiralling out of control and what do the suffering public hear from our Commissioner? Nothing. No words of assurance or plan to combat the out of control said crime rate. Quite likely he has no plan or even the faintest idea what to do. Deadwood occupying a chair in an office he’s unsuited to. Compare and contrast the actions of former Prime Minister Spencer and our current self enrichment artist and see the difference.
@ oversee: I see you were in such a hurry to reply to my comment you OVERSEE the part where is said “TALKING TO A FEW OF MY POLICE FRIENDS AND THEY ALL SAID THE SAME THING SHE WAS THE WORST COMISSIONER OF POLICE BUT I HAVE TO DISAGREE WITH THEM BEXAUSE NOBODY CAN DO WORST THAN THIS PRESENT ONE” but carry on…
@Black Hypocrisy.
You nailed me. I messed up and put my head in my hands when I re-read that paragraph after it was posted. Strangely I had a feeling there was something amiss when typing that paragraph but let it go. Anyways the late Commissioner would have strained herself to the limit NOT to be worse than the useless waste of space now occupying the post of Commissioner. Yes, you nailed my error. Hats off to you.
@oversee Nuff respects man. We all make mistakes.
She served in UPP time. WHY DIDNT Baldwin and Lovell do it?
Will Spencer honour Valerie POLE?
It is obvious that the UPP is not into showbiz so you can suggest that to your Glamour Government and let them offer a posthumous knighthood; I know that Gaston and Dr. Willy can do that.
The proposal is a good one
Let’s not politicise this good gesture.
Girl just take a seat, we can see though you, that stunt you pulled last week on Mrs Potter and then canceled your interview on vop,that shit was out of gaston’s play book,we know who you are

The bang off that Gladys Potter get she should really sit down. Tell her to go and educate herself. The UPP would be stupid to bring back Gladys as a candidate. Thats like recycling rubbish. Labour Party is trying to regain seats with new candidates. If UPP serious they should replace their losing candidates to improve their slate. It’s just common sense. Stop using emotion. Think strategy. It’s the only way UPP can win.
