PM says Antigua has other options before taking IMF loan

Prime Minister Gaston Browne announced over the weekend that Antigua and Barbuda is in no rush to enter into a loan agreement with the International Monetary Fund.

Antigua and Barbuda is in discussions with the fund but Browne there are at least three other options available to the country before formally engaging the IMF.

Government says it is holding talks with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) as it explores its options in the event that it should require funding to deal with the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
However, Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Gaston Browne, said his administration has already made it clear to the Washington-based financial institution that the country wants to introduce its own programme.
Mr. Browne further explained that the Government would be interested in long term funding of at least 15 years.
The Government has said the pandemic has impacted revenue, reducing it by as much as 40 per cent.

  2. Up to now I am still trying to wrap my head around the notion that Gaston and the ALP is contemplating going to the IMF for financial assistance. After all that was said about borrowing from the IMF this about face turn is absolutely mind boggling. I wonder how BEEF will rationalize this. BEEF I am waiting to hear from you.

  4. Please dont borrow anymore from ACB. The comrades will come around to the idea of an IMF loan its 1%. Jus crank up the big red machine vaccinate all and sundry so you can have the happiness concerts. After all the gross domestic happiness is currently very low
