Philbert Mason, a veteran meteorologist whose steady voice guided Antigua and Barbuda through decades of hurricane seasons, has died.
Mason was a familiar presence on ABS Television, delivering forecasts that residents relied on during approaching storms. His calm and authoritative broadcasts were widely credited with helping families prepare in times of danger.
He played a key role during major disasters, including Hurricane Hugo and Hurricane Luis, providing timely updates as the country faced uncertainty.
Mason later served as Director of the Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Services and was honored during the nation’s 1995 Independence celebrations for his contribution to meteorology and public service.
Beyond weather, he was an active supporter of the calypso community, regularly attending Carnival events and presenting the Best Social Commentary Award at the Calypso Monarch competition.
Tributes have poured in, describing him as both a respected meteorologist and a valued cultural figure.
He is survived by his family, friends, and former colleagues.

Amazingly I just recently requested the forms from Government House to nominate Philbert for Knighthood. He was Antigua and Barbuda’s most trusted name in Meteorology for a long time.
