PM says Antigua and neighbours might not be able to buy COVID vaccine for citizens

Prime Minister Gaston Browne says Antiguans and people throughout the Caribbean should brace for a very long battle with COVID-19, and learn to live with the deadly virus.

Browe says he sees COVID remaining a threat to the region and to the world for several more months going into 2021.

He adds that even if there’s a vaccine early next year, or even some other remedy to reduce fatalities, the reality is that COVID will remain a significant threat for some time to come.

The Antigua and Barbuda leader also suspects there will be some “vaccine politics” and some “vaccine challenges” that the region will have to face going forward.

“First of all, accessibility to a vaccine may prove very difficult because if you observe what is happening internationally — the European Union, Britain, the United States, even China — clearly they will take care of their citizens firstly,” the Prime Minister said on Pointe FM’s Browne and Browne Show.

“I have to admit that China is the only country so far that has shown a willingness to take care of Latin America and possibly the Caribbean by making vaccines available.

“But what we have seen in the US, and in Europe in particular, is that they have taken the position that they have spent billions of dollars to pursue these vaccines, and that the first set of vaccines that are produced should go to their citizens [and] I don’t know if we can fault them,” Browne added.

The Prime Minister said it is well known that “the person who pays the piper calls the tune,” so whereas one would expect a more inclusive approach recognizing that countries are as vulnerable as the weakest individual in this COVID crisis, “we have to accept the fact that here in the Caribbean we may well be somewhat vulnerable in terms of having access to these vaccines when they become available from the onset.”

And it does not end there, Browne said.

“The other issue too may be the issue of cost. The vaccines may prove to be cost prohibitive,” he said.

“The other issue that we have to manage globally is whether or not citizens, residents of countries or people generally would want to take these vaccines knowing that there would have been many shortcuts in the preparation of these vaccines. And even though the producers may vouch for the efficacy and the safety of the vaccines, there will be some reluctance and some people generally just do not wish to take vaccines.”

Browne said the science has shown that in order to control COVID-19 — 70 to 75 per cent of the population will have to be inoculated, and that in itself is going to be a challenge for all countries.

“So even our reliance on a vaccine may not prove as efficacious as we may think, which means we have no choice but to live and work with COVID and to learn to manage it,” Browne said.

  2. Thank God my Antiguan sisters and brothers will not get that fake vaccine into their systems. Not until this is tested properly. Love to my fellow Antiguans you don’t want this vaccine until proven tested and safe.

So, china creates the problem, then exports the problem around the World; then, manufactures and sells the products, to combat the problem, all while developing a solution to the problem, then gives you a loan, to purchase the solution.

  4. When a vaccine is found it will be in the interest of the developed countries to ensure that this vaccine is available to as many people as possible. Frankly, I fail to follow the logic of PM Brown.

    • Fail to see it or not….only time will tell. If I am hungry I will feed myself first before I can help other. Let’s wait and see.

    • Browne speak for yourself and the minions who vote you in there are Caribbean countries who can and will get vaccines for their people. You cant speak for the region only for your little island.
