Opportunities to expand global trade remain vital to global economic development. Trade is a lifeline for many economies and a critical success factor in raising the standard of living and providing opportunities for job creation.

In important spaces, there is a movement to be more inward-looking and the return of a protectionist approach, which could impair economic growth opportunities for many lesser-developed economies and impact growth prospects in advanced economies. This perspective was reinforced by the Prime Minister of Malaysia Yab Dato’Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s remarks during the opening ceremony, where he noted that now is a “period of unilateralism, of protectionism, of divisiveness and discord.”

In the face of these nationalist tendencies, the 2024 China International Import Expo (CIIE) provided a solid platform for the rest of the world to access China’s market. Serbian Prime Minister Milos Vucevic Serbia highlighted that CIIE is a “unique global event with a strong message.” He indicated that the CIIE “serves to increase opportunities for trade, fosters friendship, and mutual understanding”. It promotes“goodwill, sincere intentions and equality among nations.”

This seventh edition of the world’s first import-themed national-level expo, a vision conceived at the highest level in China, continues to set a very high bar to promote global trade. During this edition of the CIIE, which saw participation from 129 countries, as well as exhibitions from about 30 regional and international organisations, there were avenues to promote investment and international procurement, to build networks to facilitate trade in goods and services with China, and with other exhibitors, to share new technology and innovation, and to promote media engagement to ensure that the essential successes are shared as widely as possible.

The main objective of the CIIE was encapsulated in the 2024 theme “New Era, Shared Opportunities” and remains on course with the larger vision as declared by President XiJinping in 2013 in the Belt and Road Initiative, which is to develop a new framework for international cooperation built on the principles of consultation, collaboration and shared benefits. This was further emphasized in Premier Li Qiang’s opening remarks when he indicated a commitment to ‘turn China’s vast market into great opportunities for the world” with a pledge of mutually beneficial cooperation, pursuing new frontiersfor economic growth and partnering in innovation.

There was so much to see at the CIIE: new technologies, cutting-edge business applications, groundbreaking research findings, and several subforums! The range of products on display was expansive, and it required several days to fully explore the offerings unless there had been in-depth research and preparation to tackle specific areas. The main exhibition categories were: new product releases, food and agricultural products, automobiles, intelligent industry and information technology, consumer

goods, medical equipment and health care products, trade in services and innovation incubation.

With an exhibition space of over 420,000 square meters, 5.5 miles, and a few hours later, less than one-third of the area was explored, but many valuable insights on the range of opportunities for new products to enter the Chinese market. There were also opportunities to familiarize oneself with the intangible cultural heritage of Shanghai, and a reading room provided material on various aspects of China’s development.

At the center of the CIIE is the Trade and Investment Matchmaking Conference, the main event facilitating transactions between buyers and exhibitors. These sessions provide for one-on-one communication and cross-border matchmaking. The organisers play a vital role in ensuring the best matches for dialogue during the time available while offering support services to facilitate investment promotion roadshows and financial services for the participants to facilitate trade. It is expected that this 7th CIIE will further expand the volume of global trade beyond the accumulated US$40.9 billion of the previous six matchmaking conferences.

China continues to demonstrate commitment to exposing its population to varied goods and services. There is willingness, even eagerness, to partner by providing the capital investment required, access to technology, and even market support for countries and private sector entrepreneurs who may require it.

From a Caribbean perspective, imagine the market for goods and services from our region expanding exponentially if we put in the work and position ourselves to capitalize on initiatives such as these. Our goods and services could be niche products providing economic opportunities and contributing to our national economic development!!!

We must find ways to engage our job creation more creatively and utilize innovation and technology to harness and retain the creativity and brilliance of our youth.

CIIE seven is a goldmine opportunity for global trade expansion and positive economic prospects for all!!
