The Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party welcomes the announcement by the UWI Five Islands Campus of the official launch of the Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree programme.
This landmark initiative represents a major expansion in tertiary education opportunities within Antigua and Barbuda, providing students with direct access to a world-class legal education right here at home. The programme will be delivered with the academic support and oversight of the Faculty of Law at the UWI Mona Campus, ensuring the highest regional and international standards.
The first cohort, which has already attracted regional students, begins in August, 2026, Interested applicants are encouraged to submit their applications online via www.fiveislands.uwi.edu. The deadline for the first intake is June 30, 2026.
Minister of Education, Sports and the Creative Industries, Daryll Matthew, welcomes this development as a significant step toward strengthening national capacity in law, governance, and public service, while reducing the need for students to pursue legal studies abroad. “Antiguans and Barbudans can now pursue internationally recognized degrees at home, reducing the brain drain and increasing national skill capacity,” Matthew declared.
“With the US $80 million-dollar campus expansion imminent and with the funds already secured for this landmark investment in our human capital, the introduction of the law degree is a clear signal that Gaston Browne Administration has successfully positioned Antigua and Barbuda as a leading educational hub for the Eastern Caribbean,” Matthew remarked.
Meanwhile, ABLP aspirant in the St. John’s Rural West Constituency, Michael Joseph, where the Five Islands Campus is located, says that the expansion, which at its completion will see enrollment soar to 5000 students, will not just increase the demands for student rentals and faculty housing, but will also drive the demand in the Grays-Green Community and in Five Islands for food spots, mini-marts and delivery services. “Five Islands and Grays-Green will evolve into a “university town economy”, Joseph remarked.
Joseph concluded by stating emphatically that UWI is not just a win for Five Islands and for Rural West but for all of Antigua and Barbuda.
