Reporters Without Borders, RSF, has published the World Press Freedom Index which reveals a significant decline in the rankings of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States’ countries and territories.
The OECS now holds the 93rd position out of 180 countries, with a lower number indicating a better ranking and a higher number indicating a poorer ranking.
This marks a drastic drop of 38 places from its previous ranking of 55th in the previous year’s index.
The report by RSF attributes this decline to editorial censorship and an increase in political influence, despite the OECS’s ongoing efforts to maintain a robust press freedom record.
Additionally, the report states that while the news industry in the region has experienced a period of economic growth, the profession is marred by poorly trained journalists who often abandon their careers due to low salaries.
This problem disproportionately affects women in the region.
