The Ministry of Health, Wellness & the Environment is making a major push for green energy as plans are now in the pipeline to ensure that the twin-island state receives at least half of its energy sources from renewable technology.
This was announced by Minister Molwyn Joseph on Tuesday during a Framework Agreement signing ceremony with the Green Tech Solar Limited Group out of Cayman Islands at the Ministry’s Headquarters on Lower High Street.
During the brief exercise, Joseph declared that it is his intention to see the land of three hundred and sixty-five beaches being powered by at least fifty percent of renewable energy.
“We hope to benefit from having renewable energy in many of our institutions, including the Mount St John’s Medical Centre, our schools, and our clinics. The idea is for within the next few years that we would achieve our goal, perhaps of having approximately fifty percent of our energy being supplied by wind energy and solar energy.”
The Minister noted that it may be an ambitious undertaking, but it is something that must be done to save the world for present and future generations.
“This might be an ambitious undertaking but it’s something that must be done if we are going to save our home, the planet,” he disclosed.
The framework agreement will run for the next four years and it was signed by James Whittaker, founder and business development manager of Green Tech Solar Limited.
Moments after signing on the dotted line, Whittaker expressed elation with the partnership and is anticipating a long-term relationship with the Government and people of the twin island state.
“We look forward to many years of working with the government of Antigua and Barbuda and part of our mission as a company is that we are willing to help the Caribbean transition to renewable energy and we see this as a step forward, a step that far too few countries in the region take but something that is gaining more popularity over time and we hope to be a part of the solution long term and look forward to our partnership,” he declared.
On hand as well at the ceremony were Salomon Doumith who signed as a witness to the agreement and Project Coordinator, Churchill Norbert, who said that the agreement will pave the way for the procurement of Tesla batteries for solar energy systems.
