Works Minister Maria Browne has issued a call for increased caution on the roads of Antigua and Barbuda following a spate of accidents attributed to recent heavy rainfall and ongoing road improvements.

In her contribution to Parliament on Friday, Minister Browne emphasized the urgency of responsible driving to prevent further incidents and ensure public safety.

“Our roads are as smooth as baby bottoms thanks to recent rehabilitations, yet this has led to an uptick in road accidents,” Browne explained.

She highlighted that the slick conditions exacerbated by the rains require drivers to be extra cautious.

“It is raining, it is even more slippery now. We’re seeing an increase in road accidents, and we don’t want to have any further fatalities going into this year,” she cautioned.

The minister’s comments come at a time when Antigua and Barbuda is preparing for the ICC Cricket World Cup, a major event expected to draw significant numbers of visitors to the island.

She said the need for safe and reliable road conditions is paramount, not only for the comfort of international guests but also for the daily safety of local residents.

She assured that the setbacks caused by the recent flash floods are temporary and will not impede the nation’s preparedness for upcoming international events.

Browne’s address also included a reminder of the government’s efforts to utilize local labor for infrastructure projects, demonstrating a commitment to economic inclusivity and community involvement in national development projects.

  1. Our roads are smooth as baby bottom?

Which island she’s talking about? For all I have is frustration on the roads as I drive. Factory road is a mess, all saints is a mess, Lauchland Benjamin drive is a mess, Freeman village road is a mess., Simon Bolivar ain’t great, the roads in Gunthropes and Sutherland, Gray’s farm, Ottos… All these are a mess, and that’s only some of the roads called!
