A man who robbed a woman while brandishing a fake gun was sentenced to six years imprisonment in the High Court this week.
Twenty-four-year-old Anthony Hamilton pleaded guilty to aggravated robbery.
The woman did not know Hamilton was carrying an imitation firearm when he barged into her travel agency demanding money in April of 2017.
She did recognize his voice since he had been at the establishment about four times before to conduct business.
Those previous encounters also caused her to be familiar with the upper half of his face, which was not covered by a head-tie he used to hide his nose and mouth area.
After taking over $2000 from her purse, Hamilton pressed the weapon against her jaw demanding more money.
The woman told police her attacker also bound her hands with tape, which he had brought in a knapsack, and used the muzzle of the weapon to lift her skirt and peeked under.
She said he then threatened to sexually assault her if she didn’t give him more money.
The woman shouted in a loud voice that she had no more money and as Hamilton made his escape, he removed his disguise and she saw his face, confirming his identity.
She made this known to him as he fled the scene and later notified the police who mounted an unsuccessful search for the suspect.
About three weeks later, Hamilton called the victim’s phone tearfully apologizing about the incident.
He said he used the money to buy baby supplies and food for himself.
He also offered to pay back the money and confessed the weapon was not real.
The woman angry ended the conversation and he was later arrested by police.
While the judge accepted Hamilton showed genuine remorse and was only trying to provide for his family, he said he couldn’t sentenced him to less than six years because of various aggravating factors of the offence.
