Dear Editor,
Some years ago, Stumpy, one of our great calypsonians penned in one of his songs ” When the top is slack then the bottom will be slack also “.
When those few words were written, I am sure the calypsonian was trying to impart a strong message to the members of our local political parties.
For me, I find those few lines very meaningful and quite fitting not only for the political parties but also for the work place, the family and any other organization that exists within our community.
Now recently, the nation witnessed a national day of prayer, organized by the Christian council. It was certainly a great initiative. Overall, the attendance was good. However, I think the numbers should have been alot better.
What we saw at the service was a reflection of what takes place at our normal homes. The women are the ones usually seen attending church services especially on Sundays and the adult men choose to stay home and get involve in other curricula activities.
From my vantage point, the ratio of women to men I saw at the prayer service appeared to be 150 to 1. The presence of the men was certainly sparced. The question is where were the men? And is the behavior of our adult men the cause of our young men to be going astray?
Interestingly, the structural link of the family tree starts with God. It is then followed by the patriarch (father), then the matriarch (mother) and finally the children. Obviously, if any link at the top of the family hierarchy is missing, then it is definite that the family structure will be weaken and no doubt fall apart.
It is for this reason, why many families could be disintegrating today & our young boys are straying and ending up into bad companies. The absence of God & the absence of a proper father figure as a role model is contributing to the downfall of many families and our society’s fabric today.
Our men in the society needs to step up to the plate and be mindful that they are the backbone of the family. If they do not show example then our boy children will stray away from the family and find themselves in other organizations where they can find leadership or they themselves will try to become leaders with no leadership skills, and hence find themselves in problems later.
As fathers, we need to be cognizant how important we are in the development of the wellbeing of a child & the society. If we, as fathers are the top of the family tree are slack then undoubtedly, the bottom of our families & society will be slack.

Alex, excellent observations and truth be told.
Lol you really want to know where all the men at, simple some frustrated cause they couldn’t compete their work and some have more important things to do simple as that
Prayer is an exercise in futility.
convincing antiguan men to be FAITHFUL is an exercise in futility
Many men behave too macho, hence the spiritual strength is being overlooked.
Because after the ‘Post Plandemic Period,’ Men ceased believing in the Church and Religeon. We became Seventh Day Absentist. 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
GAMBLING
it is a reflection og a wider societal problem: ABSENTEE FATHERS, men missing in their God-ordained roles as priest and head of homes.
something is truly amiss with the men these days.
Our values have been and are influenced by Christianity. How many of us still practice Christianity? i.e. attend church to pray and celebrate life through the sacraments regularly. We invoke words like “God Help us”, “Godspeed” and “Jesus Christ”. The latter in vain. This politically motivated “Day of Prayer” brings Religion into Politics. Is this constitutionally correct?

For the same reason most congregations are women.
What calls itself church today,is nothing but an extension of what Jesus met two thousand years ago. Scribes and Pharasees. Long ago,the church lost its influence on society and most are turned off by the hypocrisy, pretense and judgemental attitudes.
So what? There are more women attending church globally than men are. Women just seem to be more interested in spiritual work than men who prefer physical more. For instance if this was a case where people were asked to volunteer as physical defense for the island against outside threat, you will see a huge absence in women and more men signing up.
