As a proud naturalized Antiguan Black business owner operating in English Harbour for 29 years, with a white customer base consistently at 98%, I am hurt, disappointed, and appalled by the racial attacks towards “whites” for their apparent support of an independent candidate.
The last time I checked, it is within everyone’s democratic right to financially or publicly support or endorse any candidate.
As an economist, I understand the potential negative economic fallout that can occur from these irresponsible statements and racial undertones, and the targeting of individuals in such an important sector as yachting.
This sector is unique and susceptible to internal and exogenous factors, so it is critical that policies, statements, and conduct toward it are always well thought out—especially in a small, tourism-dependent country like Antigua and Barbuda.
Facts: 96% of funding for events comes from “whites” in English Harbour. My business (Black-owned) accounts for part of the difference, along with other Black businesses, which is not publicized as we seek no recognition. Be careful, guys!
As a student of the teachings of Walter Rodney, V.C. Bird (Snr.), and Tim Hector, to name a few, few are more Black-conscious than I am. So wherever and whenever I see racism, I will be the first and unafraid to call it out. But nothing I see here rises to that classification of racist behavior.
Natives must seek to be more involved in their development.
It is not okay to attack specific groups and individuals in this community without examining their massive historical contributions to events, people, and political parties over the years. Context is everything.
It is not okay to attack me because of my accent and not examine my contributions to many events that hundreds benefit from.
Let’s not divide this racially integrated community.’
