LETTER: Problem with backpack at MSJMC

SLB-MSJMC

I am a worker at the hospital and I need to voice my concern because things are only fixed at the hospital once the media is involved.

The issue is about the back pay situation, when the government issues back pay for workers the hospital is not distributing the money to all the workers.

They create their own criteria as to who should receive the back pay.

I am mentioning this because the prime Minister has already announced another payment from 2018 to 2023.

However, the hospital does not acknowledge workers who started working after 2021 in regards to the backpay.

They has been 2 backpay given and myself and co workers who fit the timeline has not received anything. I am wondering if it will be the same this time.

I think it’s unfair for them to withhold money which is rightfully ours, that hospital has been doing too much illegal practices with it comes to management and they need to be addressed. Am wondering if all the unions know exactly what the workers are facing at the hospital.

The issues are never ending but now it looks like they stealing form us to. I hope that they would honor the time-line the prime Minister gave and not do what they want.

  1. We stand at a turning point for Antigua. Our nation has vast potential, but it demands real leadership—built on integrity, transparency, and a commitment to the people. A brave worker inside the hospital exposed the truth—critical supplies were missing, and staff weren’t even getting their back pay. Meanwhile, the former health minister, Molwyn Joseph, a longtime member of the ABLP team, stepped down after years of underperformance. And yet, he left with public praise. Now, as election time approaches, promises of payment return—but the truth cannot be hidden. We believe in a future where leadership answers to the people. Together, we will make Antigua great again—with accountability, unity, and a vision for a fairer tomorrow.

  2. @MAKR ANTIGUA GREAT AGAIN – MAKR? Learn to spell you dummy. You are a paid propagandist, commenting on every story which shows what a total loser you are, just like the clown show party you support. Your disinformation campaign is the work of an amateur.

@PROUD ANTUGUAN … “Make Antigua Great Again. The party I defend has a deep respect for the people of Antigua, and we consistently demonstrate better behavior and integrity than those attacking me. Let’s move forward with respect and unity—no more hate.”

  5. To the Editor,
I write not only as a nurse, but as a voice for many hardworking healthcare professionals who have remained committed to serving this nation, even when the system seems to overlook us.
There is growing concern and dissatisfaction among local nurses regarding the clear disparity in salaries between long-serving staff and newly recruited overseas nurses. It is widely known that some of these new hires are receiving salaries in the vicinity of 4,500, while nurses who have dedicated years—some even decades—of service continue to earn significantly less.
This is not simply a matter of numbers; it is a matter of fairness, respect, and morale. How is it that those who have carried the burden of our healthcare system—through staff shortages, exhausting shifts, and national challenges—are now placed at a disadvantage in their own country? What message does this send to the very people who have held the system together?
We welcome additional support in our healthcare system, but it must not come at the cost of injustice to those already serving. Equal work must be matched with equal—and fair—compensation. Experience, loyalty, and dedication should not be disregarded.
Furthermore, there has been public assurance from the government regarding back pay to be issued by the end of March. Nurses are seeking clear and immediate communication on whether we are included in this arrangement. We, too, have financial obligations, families to support, and sacrifices that deserve acknowledgment.
This situation is affecting morale across the profession. Nurses are feeling undervalued, unheard, and disrespected. If urgent attention is not given, the long-term impact on healthcare delivery could be severe.
We are calling on the relevant authorities to address these concerns transparently and without delay. We ask for equity in pay, inclusion in any back pay arrangements, and a renewed commitment to valuing the professionals who form the backbone of our healthcare system.
We will continue to care for our patients with compassion and professionalism—but we cannot continue to do so while feeling this level of inequity.
    Sincerely,
    A Concerned Nurse
(On behalf of many others who share the same concerns)

  6. Letter writer do not worry about that. Gaston will make certain they do right because it’s election in the air and he needs votes like crazy. Mark my word it will happen before voting time

From the news headline, seems that ‘…ANR:’ got

    (a) ‘…BACKPACK MIXED-UP: with

    (b) …BACK PAY.’

    ***
Seems the only thing ‘…WORKERS’ would wish to put in their ‘…BACKPACKS’ is their ‘…BACK PAY.’

    ***
Make everyone of them: ‘…EASTER BACK PAY HAPPY.’

    ***
Not sure why they should say that ‘…MONEY IS THE ROOT OF ALL EVIL.’

    ***
    But do know that when:

    ‘…WORKERS CANNOT: get

    (i) ‘…FRONT PAY: and

    (ii) …BACK PAY: or

(iii) …BORROWERS NOT PAYING BACK TO LENDERS:’ these are like:

    (a) ‘…NEEDLES AND PIN: for

    (b) …THAT IS THE DARN TIME WHEN ‘…TROUBLE BEGINS.’

    ***

    WHAT THE HELL…!

    ***
    WELL

    (i) ‘….WORKERS MAY DEMAND THAT WHICH IS DUE AND PAYABLE: but

    (c) ‘….FOR THE ADMINISTRATORS,’ MAKE NO TROUBLE.’

    ***
    BACK PAY IN BACK-PACK:

  8. tarl…4.5k and still getting drive bout in goverment car???? their landlords must be celebrating
some of those nurses look young young … how experienced are they?
we need to find out how these nurses were recruited, as in somecountries, he who greases the recruiter’s palms gets chosen
Our nurses should get 5k and more , if not they will go abroad where after taxes and accommodation costs, an experienced nurse can take home upwards of 50usd annually
