LETTER: My father is ill and needs the money for his homes government demolished

27
Booby Alley, Antigua

In July of 2022 my father Barrymore Stevens of Pointe got ill and spent quite a while at MSJMC. Based on his illness I was not able to let him return home to his residence in Boobey Alley.

He was unable to speak or walk and both myself and my older brother made an immediate decision to temporarily put him in a nursing facility as we are both permanently employed and he would require 24 hour care and lots of therapy for him to get back to at least 70% of what he used to be.

Prior to him falling ill the government had approached him several times in regards to demolishing 8 structures belonging to him. He advised them that they should contact me as he wishes to have absolutely nothing to do with the Administration and their development.

All matters regarding his houses were then dealt with by me.

In October of 2022 I discussed with my father that I would be giving the government authority to demolish the houses, including the one he lived in which the government forcefully desired.

He was not in agreement with the decision but my father advised that I should do what I think is best as his Power of Attorney.

The agreement was signed after years of questioning their integrity and ability to make payment.

They requested 60 days for the full payment to become available, which would come to an end on December 12th of 2022.

From July to now we have hired a speech therapist, a physical therapist and paid $1800 per month for residency he has taken at the nursing facility. He also sees his private doctor every other month.

In December I realized that the bills were becoming overwhelming and I made a decision to remove him from the nursing facility so he could stay with me to curb the financial burden but was unable to provide the care he needed by myself and had to resort back to the nursing facility.

As I highly anticipated the payment was not made available on December 12th as they promised.

I then reached out to the parties responsible for the settlement. Several attempts were made to get in contact with the Permanent Secretary of Public works and the Senior Crown Counsel…… Nothing was done.

On January 12th 2023, 90 days after… still nothing.

February 12th 2023, 120 days after ….. still nothing.

On the 28th of February 2023 I then reached out to the Prime Minister asking that he intervene in this particular situation due to the fact that my father is very ill and in need of what is owed to him to assist with his medical bills, therapy sessions and living accommodation. He did not respond.

Today is the 4th of March and the matter has not been treated with any form of urgency or seriousness.

At this time I have exhausted all options. I do not think that I should have to beg or run behind any politician regarding my fathers health and bills.

I hope that this reaches the ears of the relevant individuals and what seems to be a deliberate act of spite comes to an end.

I kindly ask that this be rectified and what is due to him is made available immediately to offset My fathers medical expenses.

  1. Is there anyone in the ALP leadership position that can show a modicum of CARE and COMPASSION for the elderly and indigent of Antigua? Why are ALP leaders reducing people into having to beg for what is OWED to them? Where is the Humanity of the ALP leadership?

“The moral test of government is how that government treats those who are in the dawn of life, the children; those who are in the twilight of life, the elderly; those who are in the shadows of life, the sick, the needy and the handicapped” — Hubert Humphrey

  2. Oh please. Those old dilapidated POS broken rotting rodent infested things that once were homes what profit did they bring him and would bring to him if they were left there?
I can’t understand how you quantify those broken smelly things having any value. If he got sick and those things were still standing would he still be sick and destitute?
    GIVE ME AN ASPRIN

    • You sound like a complete Idiot. Old or new what is yours belongs to you. I guess you think his family should go beg or have a fundraiser rather than the government hand over the funds owed to him so that he can receive the healthcare that he needs right?

I’ve never read anything so dumb. So because my car is old, the government should take it n then when I need to get from point A to B, I beg a ride?

    • Only Educated Dunces can make such a statement. Senseless and retarded. I hope you never grow old and sick under this administration.

    • Come on stop insulting the people if it was promise too them then they need too get what ever is owed too them you all need too stop it ..Supposed it was you or a Family Member .

    • Ur so heartless the government promise him money I believe they should keep there deal all wen it’s rotten an smelly it belong to them!!!! Would you like anyone to do thst???
U heartless piece a sh***** I hate ppl like you

    • His only daughter who lives here is a UPP supporter and that is Probably why they’ve been experiencing such a hard time. His other children do not participate in any form of politics.
How can you just say something like that?

  5. Wowwwwww this is how the next level is behaving…he wanted boobie alley so badly for his INVESTMENT PROPERTY so when the port is completed that any establishment put on that land is a money generator. Is the ADMINISTATION waiting on him to die to then pay him through his power of attorney… I guess he’s not moved by his illness as he done get what he wanted .
Have you gone to an ATTORNEY bcos it seems this situation bigger than you.

  6. He should have sold them a long time ago & he wouldn’t be in a destitute position today. When you make zero effort for your tomorrow you realize tomorrow is today.

    • You do not dictate when a person lets go of what is theirs. At 80 years old you think it’s easy to let go of things you’ve owned for 3/4 of your life?.
I may be wrong but I do not think they have any intention to pay. That man has been sick since July. They are probably hoping he dies so they’ll never have to pay or they want his family to beg and steal to take care of him since he no longer supports the ABLP.
Imagine how his child felt when they took him to live with them to cut cost and couldn’t give him the care he needed and had to take him back???
This Administration is relentless and this is being done one purpose. The fact that he’s in a nursing facility says it all. He cannot be there for free. Release his money.

  7. The ALP truly makes me sick. All these people in power do on this island is steal what doesn’t belong to them. They got attorneys like RH/CB doing there dirty work. Judgement day is coming sooner than you think for all of you crooks. I can hardly wait.
PAY THE MAN HIS MONEY YOU HEARTLESS EVIL CROOKS.

  8. This is real sad development. Gaston Browne, where are you and your Administration when these folks needed you most? Why your Administration did not give them a partial payment then pay the balance by a certain date. I knew the Stevens from lower North Street. His late mother owned a shop on that street. This is embarrassing and shameful to you people in positions of Governance. The little person always gets squeezed and pissed on. While those who financed Political Party gets the cream off the crop. They all benefit at the expense of the poor.

  9. Winston Russell – His daughter a very active supporter of UPP . She is employed by the government and not afraid to post statements against Gastón Brown almost daily on Facebook. You owe her an apology. Notwithstanding , the government should settle and pay up .

  10. This government don’t care about local contractors and suppliers. The PM spoke about PWD and accountability In the past. ABS TV went on the biggest culprit. The director- Louis brother friend, kool in every thing main supporter. How much equipment does the PM own that works for PWD. Remember him saying his son collects 25,000 per month- peanut change for equipment. Well now Maria I the minister tell me about conflict of interest.

  11. We must first take care of our citizens and be healthy and strong before we consider taking care of 1000 citizens from another land.

How can the weak and detitue adequately care for the weak and destitute? We will all end up being weak and destitute, no?

When the blind leads the blind they both end up in the ditch. Listen to the old folks.

  12. GASTON BROWNE “BADMINDED” ADMINISTRATION.PAY THE PEOPLE DEM DAMN MONEY.BY THE WAY WHERE ARE THE GASTON BATTY KISSERS ON THIS MATTER.

  13. Gaston Browne is evil. He knows Barry is sick but since Barry stopped supporting him he is being the spiteful and vindictive individual he naturally is.
The bare fact that the gentleman is in a nursing home should let you know that there are bills that need to be paid. Gaston is a wicked wicked man. I will never support ABLP again. This could be any of our family members being done this injustice. The Prime minister also has a sick mother so he should understand what it is like to take care of a sick elderly person but he doesn’t care because he is rich.
