How long must Jolly Beach Staff wait?

Jolly Beach Resort and Spa has been closed down now going on nearly 2 years due to the covid-19 pandemic. The staff are due their severance payments and yet nothing is being done except empty promises.

Most of us have been out of work entirely with no assistance except for a one time care package at the start of the pandemic. The Prime Minister has been out in the public making it sound like something is happening, saying the hotel will be sold and then reopened so that the staff can get some relief and then you do not hear anything again.

Imagine 2 parents both employed at Jolly beach now being laid off for nearly 17 months, how are they supposed to feed their children? Imagine having to move back home with your 2 children because you haven’t been able to pay rent and the landlord does not care. Imagine having to beg your former boss handouts because you just don’t have any other option and your former supervisor is also struggling because they are also out of work. This is the reality many employees are facing. Some have been lucky to find other employment and try to make ends meet but all are not so lucky.

Jolly beach employed over 400 staff and some have been there for many years and are just out in cold with nothing to show for it.  The government on one hand will say they are not the owners of Jolly beach but yet still they are the one making announcements and use the hotel when they see fit. The hotel was used as a quarantine center and was even going to be used to house refugees from the St. Vincent volcano, and whoever else the government felt like sending down there. Jolly Beach and its staff have been used and abused for years, from different companies running the hotel who do not care about the well-being of the staff or the hotel, to the government. It is going on 2 years! How much longer must the staff wait for this issue to be resolved?

  1. I feel your pain. It must make it even worse when the PM is out there boasting repeatedly that he is worth 50 million dollars and his child bride is already a multimillionaire!! They have no heart and no shame!!

  2. Well, you guys wanted to listen to the Union when Barrett was trying to revive the Hotel. I warned you guys and girls that the road for severance is a very long road. It may be a right but not one that can be force any time soon. The former LIAT employees are making the very same mistake. Let us look at case that went before. Half Moon Bay, Stanford Group. Many died and have not seen a dime of their severance pay. The unions are miss-leading their member when it comes to this. They first need to examine the company’s financial position before they advise persons to go for severance.
