LETTER: Crisis in the hospital

SLB-MSJMC

Editor,

I recently saw the Prime Minister post a picture of Robin Yearwood, and we have all heard the rumors about his health. I am happy to see that he is doing better, but I couldn’t help but notice all the well-wishers.

These are everyday working-class folks who rely on the local hospital.

I know I cannot be the only one who has noticed that these ministers and political parties do not seem to care about the hospital or its workers.

They can afford to fly to first-world countries for treatment, so what happens at Sir Lester Medical Center does not affect them.

But for us, the poor people, it is a different story. We go to the hospital daily and blame the nurses and doctors, but I think the nurses bear the brunt of it.

The public likes to blame the very people who are trying their best with limited resources to save lives—the same nurses who are underpaid and overworked because they are leaving in droves.

There is also a shortage of equipment and supplies at the hospital. Who should we blame for that?

Our hospital is in shambles, and the nurses and doctors are not the main problem.

The real issue lies with the politicians we elect to manage our affairs.

The hospital, where poor people have no choice but to seek care, is deteriorating, and nothing is being done.

In the next five years, there will be no experienced nurses left to train the younger ones, and some of you will only understand what I am saying when you or a loved one falls ill.

I say this with tears in my eyes: Mr. Joseph, you need to address what is happening at the hospital. Nurses are leaving at an alarming rate, and you cannot keep bringing in Spanish-speaking nurses when 90% of the population speaks English.

Please, sir, the hospital is declining. Do something.

  1. Such a dummy to write these opinions. Our hospital is far better than where it was ten years ago under the UPP. We even have kidney transplant done here more them once. But at no time has they claim to be able to handle any and every operation. We still are sending people to Jamaica, Barbados or Trinadad for special surgery. And for cancer we even send patients to Colombia. So if one can afford it to get a special surgery done overseas at the advise of his doctor, he can and will do so. Especially if it is you can travel.
if you are trying to find something to pin on our healthcare or at the politician that chose to seek even better healthcare overseas, please get your facts first.

  2. To be UNDERPAID not mean you through to the garbage your duty.

The same people not care about you today,is the same ones during the big health scam in sheep’s history ( sorry, human history )…with the 2 second of glory and with the EXTRA PAYMENTS to mislead the sheep’s to be slaughter…I’m personally not feel empathy for them.

The funerals homes flourish more, thanks this psyco people FROM THE BIG TO THE SMALL..their selling their soul for the God of 2 dollars ” Their parents are vanish in front their own eyes..NOT PROBLEM…miss and miss deceivers, are on calls 24/7 for this traitors get the victims wills.

In the cemetery can be a carnival…A BUNCH OF HIPOCRITS DOING THEIR BEST…drink, eat and some history tellers…when the casket is down, the mask going out…shame after shameful society.

  3. The basic operations at SLBMC is no different than anywhere else in the world. The doctors & nurses who we have here in my view focuses on primary care that is, to stabilize the patient from their ailments.

However, dealing with the root of the problem is a challenge because there is a shortage of specialized doctors & high end equipment to work with here on island.

  4. People that got an axe to grind will always criticize and bring down their own and their only desire is to be king of the ashes it’s sad that our cherished hospital one that saved so many lives is so trashed by uncaring person I recall persons marching around it have a candle light vigil and the then health minister all doom and gloom saying they would never open it so sad still today it’s the best in the Caribbean and well managed with some challenges like all over the world but the doctors and nurses are doing a great job and must be complimented for their sacred duty

  5. ………SMH, but you have PLENTY of money for CARNIVAL and CRICKET!!!! Bunch of CLOWNS running this Island!! Killing off your ANCESTORS just for the WILLS and LAND, and the LAND will sit in RUINS like the rest of the abandoned properties families have been fighting over for years here in Antigua! Crime is on a rise! Everyday it’s something! Here’s a suggestion…..build more prisons and get a crematorium to burn their loved ones in after they murder for money. SAVAGES!

  6. We need less overpaid politicians and more equipment and higher salary for the nurses and doctors slaving their butts off at MSJMC. That way we won’t have to spend a pretty dollar to send citizens overseas for healthcare. Nor import the “spanish people” who will no doubt, send funds out of the country and not care about rebuilding our healthcare system. And to be clear, this is a bipartisan issue!

  7. Why do people politicized everything. Our hospital is one of the best in the region. Our facilities have improved significantly. Although there is room for improvement…..we need to know that in order for improvement to take place there needs to be finances available. With that said how many of you use the facilities and complain and even sometimes refuse to make payments. These payments can go a long way. If we all do our civil duties and stop looking on politicians to do everything our country would be so much better

  8. Just wanted you to know that ABLP&UPP have already been tested and proven in one way or the other they are not good for Antigua and Barbuda natives. They both caused the natives to be like second class in their country. Over 75% of the economic activities is been controlled by expatriates now you can figure out what that translate to, go on the street ask questions and you will get the answers and solution to fixed this country.

  9. THE PERSON NOT LYING AND THE PERSON THAT WRITES THIS SEEMS LIKE A X CO WORKER I DOES WORK IN HOLBERTON AND THERE AND WHAT I KNOW OF NURSING CARE IS DETERIORATING …WE NEED TO STOP BEING POLITICAL AND SPEAK THE TRUTH…ALL WHEN MY DAUGHTER WENT THERE TO HAVE HER CHILD YOU CAN SEE EVEN THE BUILDING NEEDS REPAIRS BUT I WENT THERE THE OTHER DAY AND LOVE TO SEE THE CASUALTY AREA AND I KNOW THE NURSES ARE OVER WORK….I WAS ONE THAT GOT MY STOMACH DAMAGED BECAUSE THERE WASN’T ENOUGH WORKERS TO TAKE A BREAK AND WHEN YOU REACH HOME YOU CAN’T MOVE ABOUT PROPERLY BECAUSE YOUR FEET IS TO PAINFUL AND THE UNGRATEFUL PUBLIC CURSE U INSTEAD OF WHERE IT BELONGS SOMETIMES WE HAVE TO IMPROVISE WITH EVERYTHING TO GIVE PROPER HEALTH CARE MANAGEMENT KNOWS THIS BUT WHEN THEY ARE WITH THE MINISTERS BEHAVE LIKE EVERYTHING IS OKAY…NURSES CONTINUE TO SEEK FOR BETTER BUT NEVER LEAVE GOD OUT.. SOMETIMES THE PUBLIC CAN BE VERY UNGRATEFUL….BUT NOT EXCLUDING THOSE NURSES THAT DON’T HAVE NO PROPER MANNERISMS …BUT NURSES HAVE A VOICE TO… ANOTHER THING I FIND NURSES DON’T ADVOCATE FOR THEIR PATIENTS THE WAY THEY THOUGHT US … WE ARE SO SENSITIZED FOR THERE AGENDA 😪

  10. mmmm they careless I did some blood works soon due to have baby ab did my last set a blood works went for antenatal clinic an they lost my result the doctor turn up the whole a out patient nobody knows where they are an because my blood count is very low I can’t do them over now
nobody knows who went down stairs an sign for them lab doesn’t know an out patient doesn’t know who so my $80 dollars gwaan down the train an if am sick or my baby sick I won’t know an this is nonsense an as you talk everybody vex some a these nurses very careless an I can’t wait for the few weeks to come the better professional nurses work third floor an I dnt have no problem up there they are nice nurses

  11. And another thing we are looking the wrong way…..the only way out is obedience to GOD stop looking to politicians and doctors look to GOD

“14 If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land. 15 Now mine eyes shall be open, and mine ears attent unto the prayer that is made in this place. 16 For now have I chosen and sanctified this house, that my name may be there for ever: and mine eyes and mine heart shall be there perpetually. ”

  12. We must call a spared a spared and mind our own business in 268 not comparing with other countries. It’s simple nurses and doctors at SLMSMMC are given basket to carry water, from my observation the physical structure is deteriorating and need maintenance. All I’m saying whether it’s the red administration or the blue in which both has failed us, we deserved better let’s join together as natives of this beautiful country and demand it.

  13. The late Christopher O’Marde once said, “Half+learned eolle are the most dangerous people!” Quite rightly so, because they disseminate half-truths which endanger the knowledge of truth! The hospital lacks the Central Sir Conditioning unit. That affects air quality severely. The individual AC units cannot suffice! Due to the poor air quality, haematology works from 7:00 am to 10: am daily. Some areas if radiology has to make periodic breaks between tests to cool down the machines. These are all things that are managerial and maintenance problems! Even the Operating Theatre is operating below par due to moulds and poor air quality! Do not compare one poor quality with another and validate it’s substandard. Try to reach above the bar, always looking for improved ways of bettering the best you already have! Remember, they conditions can impact the lives of patients seeking medical attention! Even oONE loss of life is too much! Death is irreversible!

  14. For goodness sake @ Hallelujah Amen, how on earth is 40-odd years of ABLP governance COMPARABLE to 12-13 years under the tutelage of the UPP?

Now if the 53 years of governing Antigua & Barbuda was a more balanced one between the two main political parties, you might have had a point.

Bwoi, ABLP supporters are something else…
