LETTER: Congratulations to Empire Former Players & Fans Association (EFPFA)

2

Dear Editor,

Two weeks ago, I posted on your portal platform an article captioned ” Can anything good really come from the Gray’s Green community….?”

Of course, I do know that it is a very sensitive & contentious subject. However, the night of  August 11, 2023 certainly placed all my curiosity to rest.

At a gala at the Multipurpose Center where the official launching of the Empire Former Players & Fans Association- EFPFA took place, clearly indicated that great things can absolutley come from the Gray’s  Green community.

The night was a night to be remembered. It was not just another ordinary night for the residents of the Gray’s Green community but in my view, it was a night that brought about a greater significance to the community since EFPFA is seeking to preserve the legacy of Empire by assisting former fans & players who are facing difficult times.

Empire FC has been the face of the community for over 60 years.  It has engraved its name in Antigua’s hall of fame, specifically in football. The skills displayed and the numerous championships the team has won has proven that it’s a force to reckon with and definitely, good things can come from Gray’s Farm.

The evening of the gala was one of adornment, splendor, poetry, speeches, musical renditions & dining.

First, I was extremely impressed with the colorful & well detailed journal that was presented to each guests upon arrival. It was certainly a welcoming gesture.

All protocols were then observed with the national anthem been played & an opening prayer done by Dr. Reverend Freddi who invocated God’s presence the proceedings.

The founder of EFPFA, Mr. Ronald Gordon, was then introduced on stage by the MC Mr. Denfield Mack. While making his presentation it was obvious that Mr. Gordon was full of emotions  realizing that his dream has come to reality .

His presentation was then followed by the sole woman perhaps the rose among the thorns, Dr. Sandy Henry-Gordon. She was certainly graceful & eloquent while telling her story of EFPFA.

Next was Mr. Christopher Stevens with an original poem. The poem was very well articulated, very prolific & very creative expressing himself how he became a member of EFPFA & simultaneously extending an invitation to all friends of Empire to become a member of EFPFA also.

Following Mr. Stevens,  was  Empire’s FC president, Mr. Veron Epilus Edward’s who frantically endorsed the birth & objectives of EFPFA.

King Zakari then added the extra seasoning into the night’s program. He started with a gospel rendition which took everyone by surprise. His voice was well balance making the lyrics of the song piercing the hearts of the audience. He then finally sang his personal theme song ” The Black Man from the ghetto is guilty of been black”.  Mesmerized by his rendition, everyone was looking for more but time was of the essence.

The dinner which basically divided the program in two, was certainly unblemished. It was extremely palatable and very fulfilling. Everyone was totally satisfied with the menu and the taste of the meal. During the dining, the audience was delightfully treated with a video presentation of the former players & fans of Empire dating back from the 1960’s to present along with the many reaching out programs EFPFA has participated in.

The second half of the night was then infiltrated with speeches from Dr. Baldwin Spencer & Dr. Rev Joseph Nicholas who both chose such time to educate the audience of the importance of the role EFPFA & what such organization would mean to keep Empire’s torch burning  and at the same time to have Empire FC as the only entity from the community to identify Gray’s Green people as a people who has what it takes to compete for supremacy among the elites inspite of all the redicules & stigma the community has endured.

Finally, it was lovely to see some youngsters been awarded for their academic and athletic achievements.

Mr. Anderson ” Gangtones ” Nesbitt an icon for Empire & Antigua’s national football graced the stage and invited everyone within the community to work collectively to rebuild Empire & its dynasty. His presence surely gave me goosebumps. It was great to see him.

Overall, the night was great.  EFPFA’S Face Book page is very interesting also.  Long live EFPFA!! Long live the Gray’s Green community …

  1. Grays Farm have produced Doctors, lawyers, Nurses, Athletes, Teachers, Queens, Kings, Empire, Halcyon, Accountants etc etc. They can and are able to compete on the world stage. Thumbs up to EFPFA…. This is a great initiative that you guys are doing…. Keep it up!!

  2. That area known as Grays/ Green could be an independent autonomous municipality similar to Vatican City. We are self sufficient in many, many ways. That area could create and generate its own economy. We do not have to depend on no damn Central Government for any guidance. We can go it alone.Let us all band together and get started now.For it not too late.It is never too late to start.
