LETTER: Accomplishments of UPP & ABLP

DEAR EDITOR:

Yesterday, while I was reading an article in your news portal, I observed that someone was kind enough to highlight the projects that UPP  accomplished during their 10 years of administration. The projects are listed below

* SCHOOL MEALS  PROGRAM
* PVD FOOD PROGRAMME
*  SCHOOL UNIFORM PROGRAMME
*PAID BACK PAY OWED TO CIVIL SERVANTS
* INCREASED PENSIONS
* INCREASED TO AIR TRAFFIC CONTROLLERS
* BAU PANEL PROJECT
* VC BIRD INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
* ADDED 1500 HOTEL ROOMS-
* GAVE INCENTIVES TO NATIONALS LIKE MANY SMALL HOTELS
* CONSTRUCTED FIVE ISLANDS SECONDARY SCHOOL
* IMPLEMENTED DOLLAR BARREL
* BUILT CLINICS IN BROWNE’S AVENUE, CEDAR GROVE  & GRAY’S FARM
* CONSTRUCTED THE STADIUM
* LEAVING THE ADOMS BUILDING AHEAD

In my view, I assume that the said person forgot to list the projects that were accomplished by the ABLP during their 8 years of administration. As a result,  I decided to extend the courtesy to that person

Listed below are the ABLP accomplishments so far.

1. Made shares available to the citizenry from WIOC
2. Abolished Personal Income Tax
3. Provided many upscale homes in Denfields, Dredgers & Paynters to the average person
4.  Constructing PLH in Barbuda
5. Improve the housing of the residents in Booby Alley in Point
7.Renovated several Gov’t building
8. Extended & created a 1 stop shop at the port
9. Relieved customers of arrears for APUA
10. Improved ABS programming
11. Removed the $5.00 charge from the school meal program
12. Paid off the IMF in full
13. Transformed & expanded St. John’s Harbour
14. Transformed Heritage Quay to accommodate Oasis class VESSELS
15. Constructed a university
16. Granted young & old to own a descent vehicle
17. Reduced jail sentencing for youngsters who smokes marijuana
18. Improved the water system.
19. Masterminded & became a trendsetter to manage Covid-19 virus
20. Built the Novelle Richard’s secondary school
21. Improved VR Stadium drainage to avoid another embarrassment of having sand as the foundation
22 Saved the banks from being sold
23. Increased the Scholarship program
24. Initiated a Entrepreneurial Development Fund
25. Instituted the H.A.P.I. (Home Assistance Program for the indigent)
26. Constructed polyclinics in Glanvilles & Villa
27. Constructed the Friars Hill & George Walter Highway
28. Instituted the 2nd Chance program
29. Created a new runway in Barbuda to accommodate bigger aircraft
30. Rescued the Barbudans from the Hurricane
31 Reached out & Granted amnesty to the non nationals

Of course the list can continue but I will allow the person some time to take note of the above projects.

  2. The writer failed to mention the CIP programs that started under the UPP is what caused all that has been accomplished right now. ALL

    More money is been made right now but people are still crying.

    Most strike ever taken place, people are owed but they boast on economic power house. That’s is bad management

  4. Writer let me add a few more:
    1. Ensuring that profitable State insurance was not sold
    2. Renovated existing government buildings instead of turning one for eg into a parking lot as was planned by the former admin
    3. Saved former ABI Bank depositors
    4. Property tax debt forgiveness for home owners
    5. The Global ports deal which will ensure A&B starts receiving profits from its port investment
    6. Changing Barbuda from a ghost (PLH investment, airport project, alt energy project)
    7. McKinnon’s Upper Gambles, and York’s communities climate change adaptation project
    8. Banking policy which ensured assets for intl banks came to local ownership (Scotia & RBC sale)
    9. Equipping Sir Lester Bird hospital (30 million) with diagnostic equipment
    10. Friars hill and airport road project

  5. The accomplishments by the ABLP is definitely from a program of ” EMPOWERMENT ” unlike the program of ” HANDOUTS ” from UPP

  6. The writer should be educated in the ABLP’s accomplishments. Because he/she leaves out the most important one. ABLP brought the people of Antigua and Barbuda and by extension the people of the Leeward Islands, tertiary education at their fingertip by bringing here the Fourth Landed Campus of the University of the West Indies. ABLP rescues the entire banking sector in the currency union by solving the ABIB Fiasco in which many people would have lost their monies to the tune of one billion EC Dollars. To date people still do not understand the magnitude of this action. Buying WIOC puts us in charge of our own energy security. Note that UPP so called accomplishments were mostly about social program that are not paid for and each government need to try find the money for it every year. Unsustainable.

    Number 18? Improved the water system. The water situation is at its worse ever. People really brazen!

    • To improve something means to make it better than it was before.
      Before we had two RO plant, now we have five RO Plants.
      Before we used to produce four million gallons of water daily, now we produce eight million gallons of water daily.
      And we are in the process of replacing all the old cast iron water pipes with new special material pipes that do not rust and are flexible.
      Yes, with all this the goal post has changed as well. Our need for water has since then doubled. We have more homes, our cruise ships demand water and so do our yachts. The cost of doing business. Progress is not stagnant, it’s vibrant. The more we progress the more our needs will increase. Both Electicity and Water.

    Nice to see some balanced writing. Hopefully the undecided will now make an informed decision either way.
