Labour Party gov’t resurrects ‘land-for-youth’

The Antigua Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP) administration says the identification of 500 plots of land for sale to “youthful” individuals is the “the beginning of the fulfillment” of their promise to the youth of the country.

The lands, which were identified by the Central Housing and Planning Authority (CHAPA), will sell for a reported $4 per square-foot where there is infrastructure in place, based on reports from the government’s Chief of Staff, Lionel ‘Max’ Hurst.

However, the purchaser have to pay a 5 per cent to 10 per cent deposit of the value of the land under “flexible terms”, which will allow the individual to pay over a 10 to 15 year period.

Hurst says CHAPA will also provide a number of temporarily unemployed youth, who were already approved for purchases, credit at a cost of 4% per annum.

More details of the project is expected to be revealed next week during a CHAPA press conference and the application forms, and a step-by-step approach in order to ease the application and approval process is expected to be posted on the Planning Authority’s website as well.
