Justice or Vengeance? Caribbean Grapples with Grief and Rage After Tragic Deaths of Young Girls

Two horrific child deaths—those of 11-year-old Adriana Young in Guyana and 9-year-old Chantel Crump in Antigua—have ignited deep public outrage across the Caribbean, prompting calls for justice and stirring debate over the limits of public response.

Adriana’s body was found under unclear circumstances at a hotel in Guyana, sparking rioting, looting, and arson by angry residents who torched the hotel and the owner’s home.

In contrast, Antigua has seen a more restrained response following Chantel’s killing, after her accused attacker turned herself in and was charged.

“We’re hurting,” said one Antiguan mother. “I don’t agree with taking justice into your own hands, but I understand why they did it. People are angry.”

Others warned that while the grief is justified, actions like property destruction could undermine the rule of law. “Even if a crime has occurred, we must not become criminals ourselves,” one resident told reporters.

The contrasting reactions have reignited a broader regional conversation about justice, frustration with systemic failures, and the risk of vigilante actions spiraling into lawlessness.

As public anger simmers, some voices are calling for calm and urging citizens to honor the victims—Chantel and Adriana—by demanding justice through legal means rather than mob retaliation.

The discussion, many say, must now shift from outrage to reform.
