Class of 2018 CXC Students strike a pose before the start of their graduation ceremony at Jolly Harbour

Since opening its doors in Buckleys, 2001, Island Academy (IA) is proud to be the only international school in Antigua. The campus is home to over 270 students and has always been dedicated to offering a world-class education to its diverse role ranging from Kindergarten through to Grade 13. To that extent, IA’s students are prepared for the Grade 6 National Assessment, Caribbean Examinations (CXC), as well as the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) examinations, the two-year, post-CXC College preparation course.

Island Academy passionately believes that socio-economic status should not be a barrier to success and is proud that 40% of the students at the school receive financial aid from the bursary fund.

Since IA began offering CXC subjects in 2009, it has ranked in the top performing schools in the annual CXC examinations on a national and regional level. IA placed 2nd in the country once again this year with 97% of our students receiving all passes with the most common grades being 1s and 2s.

IA pass rates across the different subjects have been very high and the school continues to have fantastic results in English, Math, IT, Physics, Spanish, Caribbean History and POB among others. The school saw 100% pass rates in as much of 70 % (9 out of 13) of all subjects offered.

Students who sat exams this year are elated by their results. Some will be already moving on to tertiary education elsewhere, while others will return to do the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP). The IBDP is the fastest growing 16-19 qualification in the world and IA has been offering the programme since 2011 successively achieving a 100% pass rate. Every subject area enjoys performance above international averages, a real accolade considering there are over 4500 IB schools across the world.  IA opens this programme to students who perform well at CXC level achieving at least five 1s and 2s inclusive of Math and English.

IA has been able to produce both exceptional CXC and IB graduates. Many of these students have gone on to pursue their collegiate studies in North America and Europe. IA students have gone on to Georgetown (USA), McGill (CN) and several prestigious Russell Group/Red Brick institutions in the UK. Many IA graduates have secured scholarships and/or completed their tertiary studies in reduced time as their IB credit has transferred to their University. And, as the years go by, more are returning home to make their contributions to Antigua and Barbuda.

The school remains passionately dedicated to the success of all of its students and through its support system, students can expect to make the best choices and select the right fit for their academic and social future.
