Rescuer Honoured After Near-Disaster at Antigua Sailing Week
A crisis was averted on Day 2 of the 56th Antigua Sailing Week when a boat carrying six young sailors from the National Sailing Academy began sinking following a steering failure and sudden leak.
Rescuer Maurice Belgrave responded to a Mayday call, saving the crew and using a scuba suit to plug the breach before towing the vessel ashore.
A collapsed mast further complicated the rescue, but all sailors returned safely.
Race Manager Jamie Torres later honoured Belgrave for his bravery, highlighting the vital role of skilled support crews in regatta safety.
