Outgoing Prime Minister Jack Guy Lafontant, has led the tribute for former health minister Dr. Michaelle Amédée Gédéon, who died at the Bernard Mevs Hospital, Wednesday, one day after being involved in a vehicular accident.

Lafontant, who has announced his resignation from the Jovenel Moise administration said that Haiti “has lost a great lady and the health sector, a specialist in public health”.

Dr. Gédéon, who served in the Rene Preval administration between 1999-2001, was the second woman ever to be elected as head of the National Society of the Haitian Red Cross (NSHRC).

“Today, with this incalculable loss, the Haitian Red Cross mourns the departure of a former President who has shaped the destiny of the National Society and who will remain, in our memory, a volunteer and humanist, always attached to the values and Fundamental Principles so dear to our humanitarian commitment to the most vulnerable communities,” said NSHRC president, Dr. Guiteau Jean-Pierre.

Former first lady, Sophia Martelly, described the former health minister as a “humble and courageous woman,” adding that her “sudden death is a huge loss for the Haitian medical sector”.

Dr. Gédéon was a graduate of the Royal University of Haiti and Harvard University in the United States.

Police said she was involved in a vehicular on Tuesday along the National Road while e-turning from Pestel, a commune in the Corail Arrondissement, in the Grand’Anse department of Haiti.
