Group begins work towards monitoring programme for bird species in Antigua and Barbuda

2

The Department of Analytical Services (DAS), in collaboration with the Biodiversity Research Institute (BRI), is hosting a two-day training exercise on the assessment of birds on Antigua and Barbuda for the purpose of tracking and bio-monitoring.

The workshop seeks to train environmentalists on procedures for the trapping, banding, and tracking of birds, and scientists on methods of sample collection for subsequent analysis.

The main aim of the workshop is to gather important information on the distribution of various bird species on Antigua and Barbuda in the important birding areas.

Additionally, we intend to gather important conservation data as well as information on the levels of contaminants in the different species of birds. Contaminants of interest include mercury, pesticides, and viruses such as Avian Influenza.

An important alliance is foreseen between the DAS/BRI and national environmental groups and citizen scientists.

It is our long-term intent to develop a comprehensive monitoring programme for bird species in Antigua and Barbuda.

The DAS, in executing its Specific International Progrmame Project, will support sample collection, analysis and data management in relation to birds and other matrices. There is a great willingness on our part to forge strategic partnerships with key entities to meet our goal of protecting human health and the environment through the application of science.
