Government vows to make good on overtime pay

2

Although not disclosing the exact figures, the Cabinet of Antigua and Barbuda today acknowledged that several groups of workers within the employ of the Government are owed overtime arrears.

In a statement, the Cabinet said it regrets not paying the monies owed on-time.

However, the government says several workers have reported that when overtime is paid in bulk, they have made use of the enlarged payment by doing what traditionally has been done by those who engage in “throwing box money”.

“Nevertheless, the Cabinet acknowledges that it has a legal obligation to pay on-time and promises to make good on the accumulated amounts now owed to several groups within the employ of the Government,” according to a statement from Cabinet.

Arrangements are also being put in place to pay owed/negotiated back-pay amounts in two tranches; the first payment will be made in October 2018, and the final payment before Christmas 2018.
