The government’s focus on holding parents accountable for their children’s actions remains a top priority.
Attorney General Sir Steadroy Benjamin stated that consultations with stakeholders are underway to determine appropriate punishments.
The draft act will include penalties for parents, with some provisions for compensating victims.
Benjamin emphasized that each case will be evaluated individually, with no blanket approach.
This initiative follows a notable case in the US, where a mother was held liable for her son’s school shooting.

Man ready fi action, come tess
The case in the US involved a parent who knew that the child had a weapon and what they were planning and didn’t try to stop it. The circumstances don’t apply to every situation in which a child does something wrong. So, curious to see how they intend to frame this law in fairness to all parties. Also, what if it’s a sibling, aunt, uncle grandparent, cousin, or roommate who is aware but not the parent? Shouldn’t they be charged instead? Also, what age child are they intending to punish parents for? Personally, I think it’s the child who should be punished by being sent to juvenile detention or military school etc. It’s unrealistic to expect parents to have 100% control over every child and that level of control might actually be harmful to children.
