Prime Minister Gaston Browne Announces Plans to Boost Food Production and Support Farmers
Prime Minister Gaston Browne of Antigua and Barbuda has unveiled ambitious plans aimed at revolutionizing the agricultural sector to enhance food production and support local farmers.
In a recent interview on Pointe Xpress, Prime Minister Browne highlighted the importance of making food production a national priority and encouraging broader participation in farming.
“Literally, I’m trying to make this issue of food production a political issue,” stated Prime Minister Browne. “When it comes to feeding a nation, we should have the participation of as many people as possible. No one is too big to be a farmer.”
The Prime Minister emphasized his efforts to destigmatize farming, noting that many individuals are now expressing interest in agriculture.
To address the issue of unused land and facilitate access for serious farmers, Prime Minister Browne announced plans to establish an agricultural trust.
This trust will redistribute unproductive land to individuals committed to farming, thereby promoting food security and addressing land accessibility challenges.
“We plan to get all of the land that is not in production into an agricultural trust and redistribute them to serious people,” Prime Minister Browne explained. “There are people who are serious about getting into farming but can’t get any land because others are tying up acres of land without farming it.”
In line with these initiatives, Prime Minister Browne revealed plans for an upcoming agricultural symposium, scheduled to take place before the end of May.
The symposium will bring together farmers to develop a holistic strategy for increasing food production. Additionally, the government will consider additional incentives and support measures to bolster the agricultural sector.
“I’m of the view that whatever incentives are within the means of the government, we should support our farmers to increase food production,” stated Prime Minister Browne. “We’re not only targeting farmers but also inviting wealthier individuals and businesspeople to consider backward integration in farming to partner with serious farmers and boost production.”
To further support farmers, the government has allocated funds to acquire additional farming equipment, including tractors, to assist with land preparation and maintenance. Prime Minister Browne also highlighted efforts to address water supply challenges by constructing dams on various farms, essential for successful farming operations.
“We recognize the importance of water in farming, and we’re assisting farmers in building water catchments on their farms,” Prime Minister Browne noted. “This includes major dam projects in Tab Hill Garden and the Sanderson area, aimed at ensuring consistent water supply for agricultural activities.”
The upcoming agricultural symposium and investment in equipment and infrastructure demonstrate the government’s commitment to revitalizing the agricultural sector, promoting food security, and supporting the livelihoods of local farmers. Farmers and stakeholders are encouraged to participate in the symposium and collaborate on strategies to enhance food production in Antigua and Barbuda.

Too little too late, not after you done HUFF the lands at Dunbars for you and your cronies and now pretending that you care about Agriculture and agriculture production?
GASTON U N THE ABLP GOVERNMENT ARE A PARADOX.
YOU NEED TO GO. GET RID A DEM
Is PM Gaston Browne now the Minister of Agriculture?
Gaston is not the Minister of Agriculture; he is just simply using this as a distraction to take the heat off of him with the DCA rental with his son.
Gaston is feeling the heat from the questions asked about his son buying the WIOC and renting it to DCA.
No one will object to the idea of us growing more of our own food.
This is not a genuine concern of the Gaston Browne’s administration; it being used as a distraction.
Yes, he is Minister of all Ministries in the Government of Antigua and Barbuda. That man is a Narcissist.
No sensible person is believing anything coming from a notorious liar. The heat is on and there’s no intention of letting up,according to Mr. Lewis, so all these promises aren’t going to change anything now. Agriculture is alive and thriving in your and a few of your acolyte’s domain and dormant everywhere else so spare us the crap.
Not the want a tongue mek cattle can’t talk
The Agriculture/Aquacuiture Industry will only get to such levels regarding, the #food_security of the Nation when the AGRICULTURE and AQUACULTURE INDUSTRIES get the same perks and concessions, as the Tourism Industry.
It’s gonna require production facilities, along with collaboration and cooperation from other Nations in the Region. These are the areas which CARICOM must develop systems for before allowing TOTALLY FREE MOVEMENT of people within the Region.
There’s much more needed, than the usual lip services and empty promises.

Barely a year into his third term, and if anyone can tell me one good thing this man has done for the people of Antigua, I would love to know? I’ll wait.
But hey, this is the “fork tongue liar” y’all put back in power, or did he stole the election, cause there is no way i will sit here and believe that smart Antiguan’s voted or wanted this man back in office, no way on Gods given earth, that this man won this last election fairly.
He couldn’t even beat Shuggy, twice, and that should tell y’all something, that he couldn’t steal the SMS bi-election, even though we all knew he tried.
Four more years of this, in these trying time..smdh..long road ahead my people, long long road.
Real joker..
Discussion and consultation are always good. Imho apart from the focus on growing there should also be a focus on adequate distribution of local produce to make it readily accessible in communities island-wide. Also, to replace some of the unhealthy packaged snacks and greasy food consumption, there should be efforts made to encourage the use of such produce to create healthy value-added products in communities e.g. we have lots of local traditional cook shops, but some locals should go into business producing healthy ready-to-eat or grab-and-go food such as sandwiches, veggie quiches, soups, wraps, healthy fruit-based treats etc. So, distribution and value-added products please and thank you…
You need to go.
Logistics question…
How GOAB gonna prepare, plan and successfully execute a big agri symposium in MAY, before SIDS?
The PM berating Antiguans for having insufficient accommodations available for SIDS + we know water is scarce, road network not ‘world class’, etc.
Ahhh, perchance food security and island sustainablity are on the SIDS 4 agenda?
…this after kicking farmers off farm land to build houses…right
