Woman poses on monument of VC Bird/ social media photo

A viral image of a woman posing atop the bust of Antigua and Barbuda’s first prime minister, Sir Vere Cornwall Bird, has sparked a wave of public backlash, debate and reflection across social media, with opinions sharply divided over whether the act was disrespectful or overblown.

The image, widely circulated online, shows the woman reclining on the monument in a suggestive pose. The statue honors Bird, widely regarded as the country’s “Father of the Nation,” and holds deep historical and cultural significance.

Many commenters condemned the act as offensive and inappropriate, arguing that national monuments should be treated with respect. Some called for consequences, including fines or deportation, while others questioned how the photo was allowed to be taken in the first place.

“I find this act to be very disrespectful to the people of Antigua and Barbuda,” one social media user wrote, reflecting a common sentiment among critics.

Others echoed that view, saying visitors should take time to understand local customs and cultural sensitivities before engaging in such behavior, particularly at sites honoring national figures.

However, a competing thread of responses pushed back against the outrage, noting that the woman had reportedly removed the image and expressed regret after seeing the reaction. Some argued that continued sharing of the photo was amplifying the perceived disrespect.

“She’s a tourist taking a picture by a statue… she was respectful enough to remove the picture after she saw comments,” another user wrote.

Several commenters also criticized those reposting the image, suggesting the ongoing circulation was prolonging the controversy unnecessarily. Others called for a more measured response, saying the situation presented an opportunity for education rather than condemnation.

“The girl deleted the pic… why are you all still prolonging it?” one comment read, highlighting concerns about social media escalation.

Some voices downplayed the incident altogether, describing it as harmless or humorous, while others pointed to broader issues facing the country as more deserving of public attention.

The incident has also raised questions about how public monuments are protected and whether clearer signage or guidelines are needed at heritage sites to prevent similar situations.

Sir Vere Cornwall Bird is a central figure in Antigua and Barbuda’s political history, credited with leading the country to independence in 1981. His legacy remains a point of national pride, making the reaction to the image particularly strong.

As debate continues online, the episode underscores the powerful role of social media in shaping public discourse — and how quickly moments involving cultural symbols can escalate into national conversations about respect, identity and accountability.

The reality is that while this might not have been an Ai inspired image; it could very well be done in the future.

  6. The pink wig, pum pum shorts, the willingness to climb up barefooted in an area that we know to be dirty says all that we need to know about this woman.
Which woman with an iota with self- respect would cock her legs up like that in a high- traffic area, where no one else is carrying on like that?
Who would dare to take off their shoes in town ESPECIALLY Market Street?
I mean, she’s acting EXACTLY how I’d expect her type to be acting.

  7. Frankly Speaking, I do not think Papa was bothered at all. I mean no disrespect but from what I understand he loved them young they say one was a Cutie by name and nature

  8. Our black queens. Again. Leave them to their own devices and the often descend into degeneracy. You typically don’t see other races perpetrating this type of behavior. Very sad. There is a solution, though. Will share one of these days…
BTW The internet is forever, young lady.

  9. Lolla Doll was born around 1992 that means she was about 7 when VC Bird passed away in 1999 she not from here and she don’t seem to have much upstairs so ya can’t expect too much decency from her……

  10. @ NINJA Observer,

The race of this you woman has NOTHING to do with her less than appropriate behaviour and for you to imply that this is type of behaviour is typical of black women as opposed to other ethnic counterparts is classic misogynoir rhetoric and highly offensive. I grew up with young women of many races who have behaved similarly and more boisterously so why must you buy into the harmful stereotype that black women are some how less we’ll behaved or conduct ourselves in a way that is less befitting? If anything, your comment proves that access to the internet does not mean you have anything remotely useful to say. Sadly, smart phones were also made for idiots.
