Their journey began with a shared commitment to healthcare and community service, a mission that led them to one of the world’s most renowned medical schools.

ELAM, known for its comprehensive curriculum and focus on social medicine, training doctors from the four corners of the globe.

This institution provided these dedicated students with an education rooted in the principles of primary healthcare and community-oriented medical practice.

Dr. Michelle Jeffrey, the valedictorian, exemplified academic excellence and leadership throughout her time at ELAM. Her dedication and hard work earned her the top spot in her class, a testament to her commitment to becoming a physician capable of making a significant impact on her community.

Dr. Neejah Crump, Dr. Sadik Spencer, and Dr. Alex Kelsick also demonstrated outstanding perseverance and dedication. Each brought unique strengths and perspectives to their studies, enriching the learning experience for themselves and their peers.

Dr. Jeffrey  eloquently stated in her valedictory address, “Now, as university graduates, we are in an unrivaled position to make a difference in the world.

We have the knowledge, skills and tools necessary to face any competition and generate a positive impact in our communities. Whenever you face challenges, remember everything you have learned here, remember that you are capable of much more than you think. Today we celebrate this achievement, but also what is to come.”

Now, as they return to Antigua, these new doctors are eager to apply their knowledge and skills to benefit their homeland.

Their education in Cuba has prepared them not only as competent medical professionals but also as advocates for accessible and equitable healthcare. Their return is timely, as Antigua continues to strive for improvements in its healthcare system.

The success of these four graduates is a source of immense pride for Antigua.

Their achievements reflect the support and encouragement of their families, communities, and the opportunities provided by international educational collaborations between the governments of Antigua & Barbuda and The Republic of Cuba.

In attendance for the graduation exercises was Antigua and Barbuda’s Ambassador to Cuba, George ‘Junie’ Goodwin.

With their return, Antigua gains not only four new doctors but also four dedicated individuals ready to make a lasting impact on their communities, embodying the spirit of service and excellence that instilled in them during their studies and training.

  1. Congratulations to them. But don’t stop there, please consider specializing. The sky is the limit.

  2. I recall meeting Dr. Spencer once on a flight from Miami to Austin during his last year of studies, he was going on summer vacation I think leaving Cuba. He was reading a medical textbook and out of curiosity I asked him if he was studying medicine . Such a well spoken charismatic confident young man. I had a family member who at the time recently had a stroke and had a few questions, he answered them unbothered and even left his email address with me incase I had any more questions and even sent me reading material that broke things down in a way that the common man could understand. It was only at the end of our interaction I learnt he was Antiguan like myself and it made me swell up with pride. I’m glad to see him and the other Antiguan students doing well. Congrats as well to the young Lady Dr. Jeffery who was valedictorian. We must commend our youth when they do good, because we are the same people who are quick to criticize when they do bad.

  3. Congratulations to all…. It is in deed a proud moment for us Antiguans. Your skills are definitely needed. There’s a shortage of doctors at SLBMC. The handful of doctors there are overwhelmed with work. So welcome onboard!!!
