Pringle Says UPP Will Introduce Four-Day Work Week by 2027
UPP Leader Jamale Pringle says a United Progressive Party (UPP) government will implement a four-day work week by 2027, as part of a wider reform package targeting public sector workers.
Speaking at a campaign rally, Pringle outlined a series of measures aimed at restructuring the public service, including raising the minimum pay for non-established workers to $2,700 per month, reclassifying positions, and ensuring salaries are aligned with qualifications.

He said the reforms are intended to correct long-standing disparities in the system while improving working conditions and financial stability for thousands of government employees.
Pringle also pointed to concerns about fairness in employment and compensation, arguing that workers should not be disadvantaged based on their status within the public service.
“Reviewing public service salaries” and ensuring workers are properly compensated forms a central part of the UPP’s platform, he indicated, alongside broader structural changes to how government employment is organised.
The proposed four-day work week is being framed as a key shift in how the public sector operates, with the party positioning it as both a productivity measure and a step toward improving work-life balance.
The package of proposals represents one of the UPP’s most direct appeals to civil servants and middle-income workers ahead of the general election, as the party seeks to capitalise on concerns over wages, cost of living, and job conditions.
Pringle said the measures are part of a broader effort to ensure that government “works for you,” with policies aimed at delivering measurable improvements in the lives of ordinary workers.

If it was Gaston you would be singing praises, useful idiots!
I genuinely support any plans to implement 4 day work week. One thing people misunderstood when I tell them about it is that they believe it will result in less pay because the understanding of currently we are in the process of 13.50 per hour so detailing the pay restructure is a good outline of the process that is made to during the implementation.
And the facts are also stated in the many countries that have implemented/tested from UK, Iceland, Brazil, Philippines or other Asian countries they all share a sizable improvement to people being having less burnout, increased mental health and being happier because they have freetime to do what they want not just go work, home leaving you time to just sleep and clean and get some little groceries on repeat.
This is the first sensible plan brought forward so far. Studies have show that creating a better work/life balance results in greater productivity. The 4 day work week have been implemented in Iceland, UAE, Belgium and some private companies globally.
In the US, we went from 5 days 8 hours shifts to 3 days 12 hours shifts for 3 weeks and 4 days 12 hours shift 1week of the month…for a total of 13 working days a month. It was great! We made up our own work schedules; I would, as much as possible, work my 3 days in a row with 4 days off, then start the next week with 4 days off working the last 3 days in a row. 8 days off together. My work schedule wasn’t doable for most of my coworkers…but for me, it was fabulous! Don’t knock till you try it!
I would wholeheartedly support this but Antigua is still too reliant on in-person services. We will have to start moving MORE to online services before this can work I think, which will require robust investments and safeguards.
Also, as long as people don’t expect to get paid for a 5 day week, but work 4 days. This reduction in pay will have a ripple effect on the economy and people’s bank account.
I would be interested in hearing more about this…..
@ I wanna destroy my Antigua again…4 day work week not gonna work out here at the moment it’s just talking points like the police commissioner saying we will have number plate readers with no central government network system in place…..who are u feel are u ah talk to???? …Hoping your having a wonderful day useful idiot
I never hear so much not gonna happen crap coming from leader of the opposition. Yes a four day work week has its benefits, but this will not work in Wadadli. This will require 10hrs a day, still Monday to Friday, with some unique scheduling, because of the large work force, we now have this one day off during each week to think about, question will it be a set day, or will it be rotated every week? Will you be able find a work force that’s fully committed to work 10hrs a day in Antigua? problems #1, then assigning this very important day off to a particular employee will be more problem #2, and by the way what time will be starting time, 7am or 8am? Since I know 9am is out of the question, so all this crap is just election drama.
