Former LIAT workers get vouchers

Many employees who were terminated from LIAT 1974 Ltd and Caribbean Airport Services (CAS) during the COVID-19 pandemic, began receiving grocery vouchers on Friday through a partnership between the Antigua and Barbuda Workers’ Union and Billy’s Food Mart.

The initiative comes as an interim gesture of compassion as the ABWU continues to advocate for the ex-workers’ severance payments. Speaking at a brief presentation exercise, ABWU President Kem Riley said that the Executive was pleased to sanction the initiative as it provided a tangible demonstration of the Union’s commitment to its members.

Leslie Salmon, Managing Director of the Food Brokerage Group of Companies, the parent company of Billy’s Food Mart, said his business takes its responsibility as a corporate citizen seriously.

“My company’s point of view is that any opportunity we can get to assist any employee that has been affected by the pandemic, we will always do our best within our means to assist. That has always been our company’s policy.” Salmon asserted.

The gift voucher carries a value of EC $200 for the purchase of food, as well as other household items, and is redeemable at Billy’s Food Mart on Friars Hill Road.

Former LIAT and CAS workers who registered for the initiative can collect their vouchers at the ABWU Headquarters on Lower Newgate Street between the hours of 8:00am and 4:30pm, Mondays – Fridays. Recipients must also present a photo identification to collect and redeem their vouchers.

  1. Workers are owed hundreds of thousands of dollars but have to literally beg for $200 vouchers! But at least Billy’s is doing far more than these wicked shareholder Governments. BTW…many ex workers can neither afford the gas or bus money to get to Billy’s to collect! In the meantime the devil PM repeatedly boasts how rich his child bride and son are…uncaring to the bone!

  2. 2 years…. and still ex workers from LiAT and CAS have received absolutely nothing from their hard working years .. what a utter Disgrace. DISGRACE on these corporations, DISGRACE on the union who suppose to be representing these workers and a DISGRACE on the government for just turning a blind eye and not intervening on this situation. These sort of situations should never be permitted to happen. The government need to do much more for these people. How can you be putting in years of work for a company for 10,15 some workers over 20 years and have nothing to show for it. This is so Sad and absolutely disgusting.
