Nicholas Eyes Stronger Margin in Bellwether City East After Six-Vote Win

A constituency decided by just six votes in the last general election is again drawing national attention, as incumbent ABLP candidate Melford Nicholas says he expects a stronger showing when voters return to the polls on April 30.

Nicholas, who narrowly retained St. John’s City East in 2023 by a margin of 791 to 785, acknowledged the tight result but argued it came during a broader swing against his party. He told ABS Television’s Know Your Candidates programme that the political environment has since shifted.

“I was able to prevail even against a 20% swing,” Nicholas said, referring to the last election cycle. “This election is a different election… you may well find that the swing has come back to the Antigua Labour Party.”

He declined to predict an exact margin but said he is confident the outcome will be more decisive this time around.

“I think I will do much better… I know that we’re going to do much better in St. John’s City East,” he added.

St. John’s City East has long been regarded as a political bellwether, with Nicholas noting that no government has been formed in Antigua and Barbuda without winning the constituency since 1971. That history has placed added scrutiny on the race, which pits him against the United Progressive Party’s Pearl Quinn Williams.

The seat’s significance is heightened by its role in reflecting broader national trends, particularly in closely contested elections. Nicholas said that while the six-vote margin has been widely cited, it should be viewed in the context of overall voter movement at the time.

“It is to be remembered… there was a palpable swing against the Antigua Labour Party,” he said, adding that despite that trend, his support base held.

With the April 30 vote approaching, attention is expected to focus heavily on City East as early results come in, given its track record as an indicator of the national outcome.

  1. The out and out arrogance of these ABLP basket cases shows no bounds. Talking about “stronger margins” just goes to show that they believe that this General Election will be a walk in the park for them (despite their narrow win last time out).

I’m hoping their misplaced superciliousness will come back to haunt them at the polling stations next week.

Dear Lord, hear our prayers and save Antigua🙏🏾

  4. The RENAISSANCE my backside, you might not even know the meaning of the word. Any rebirth of ABLP will spell doom and gloom for Antigua and Barbuda. It will be more corruption. America and Europe is watching closely. The only thing fitting for this kleptocracy is its burial
