DoGA Completes Major International Report on Gender Equality.

Antigua & Barbuda submits Beijing Declaration & Platform for Action report .

St. John’s, Antigua : On June 1st, the Directorate of Gender Affairs (DoGA) submitted the country’s 2024 report on progress ma de in relation to gender equality as prescribed by the Beijing Declaration & Platform for Action (BPfA) .

The submission comes at the end of several months’ worth of consultation and validation exercises spearheaded by the Directorate. Beginning in February, the process started with a review of previous BPfA reports and other relevant national documents, including Antigua and Barbuda’s most recent report to the Committee on the Convention for the Elimination of All Forms of Violence Against Women and Girls (CEDAW), and the Voluntary National Review on the Sustainable Development Goals (SGDs).

The DoGA then consulted with government, the private sector, and civil society stakeholders to assess the nation’s progress towards gender equality over the past five years. This process allowed the agencies directly involved in the BPfA’s key areas of concern to report on any policies, programmes, or activities conducted during the reporting period that aimed to address challenges faced by women and girls.

This information was then compiled into a draft report; a process overseen by the BPfA Working Group. The Working Group comprised of representatives from the Family & Social Services Department, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Department of Social Policy, Research and Planning, Women Against Rape, and the Royal Police Force.

In May, the DoGA hosted a mass validation exercise where the stakeholders reviewed the draft report and submitted their final amendments. The updated draft was then shared with ministry officials for final approval before submission.

Executive Director, Jamie Saunders, says he is pleased with the process and with the report. “Our goal was to gain an accurate picture of Antigua & Barbuda’s progress since out last report in 2019 through a fully transparent and consultative process and we accomplished that. This report will not only satisfy the BPfA Committee but will also provide a baseline upon which the DoGA and its partners can continue to build.”

The Directorate of Gender Affairs expresses its sincere thanks to all the agencies that were involved in the curation of this year’s report on the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action. We look forward to the nation’s continued support in making gender equality a reality in Antigua & Barbuda.
