Del Mar Set to Host This Year’s Breeders’ Cup

0

The Breeders’ Cup is considered the world championship meeting in horse racing. It is particularly big in North America, with many fans from Antigua making the trip to the event every year.

Del Mar Racecourse in California will play host to the two-day international meeting in 2024. There will be runners, jockeys, and trainers from around the world, including in the Caribbean. Here is a look at some of the highlights this year.

Derby Winner Entered in Breeders’ Cup Classic

The most valuable price at the Breeders’ Cup is the Breeders’ Cup Classic. This race sees the best global dirt horses compete over a distance of 1m2f. Those placing horse race bets on the race this year will find that Derby winner City Of Troy is the +700 favorite to prevail.

What makes this year’s renewal so fascinating is that City Of Troy is the son of former US Triple Crown winner Justify. As the horse race results show, he has also been successful in the Eclipse Stakes this season in the UK.

Aidan O’Brien has won some of the biggest races in the world, including in North America. The Breeders’ Cup Classic is one of the few races he has yet to land. His colt will take on some strong American horses, with Forever Young representing the best of the home team.

Thorpedo Anna the Star in Breeders’ Cup Distaff

The biggest star in the fillies and mares’ division this season has been Thorpedo Anna. She has been successful in all four of her races, including three triumphs at Grade One level.

Kenneth McPeek’s runner won the Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs back in May where she handled the sloppy conditions at the Kentucky-based racecourse. She then traveled up to New York to win the Acorn Stakes at Saratoga, while on her latest run, she prevailed in the American Oaks.

Thorpedo Anna will be taking on the older horses at Del Mar in what will be the toughest test of her career to date. No three-year-old has won the Breeders’ Cup Distaff since Monomoy Girl’s victory in 2018.

European Raiders Targeting Turf Races

Although it is the North American horses that tend to dominate the dirt races at the Breeders’ Cup, the European runners often have success on turf, a surface they are very familiar with. One of the races they will be confident of winning this year is the Breeders’ Cup Turf, as defending champion Auguste Rodin is expected to return to defend his title.

There is also a strong European contingent in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf. Pretty Polly Stakes winner Bluestocking will represent leading UK trainer Ralph Beckett. O’Brien is set to saddle Opera Singer, a filly who scored at Glorious Goodwood in the Nassau Stakes, while French mare Mqse De Sevigne is expected to be a big player.

In the Breeders’ Cup Mile, former 2,000 Guineas Notable Speech represents Godolphin. The strong ownership organization has horses based around the world. Their colt will carry their blue silks and take Irish 2,000 Guineas winner Rosallion and Royal Ascot winner Porta Fortuna.

The 2024 Breeders’ Cup takes place between November 1-2 at a racecourse that is described as “where the turf meets the surf”.
