Dates for official funerals announced

Antigua and Barbuda will give official send-offs to two of its decorated sons; Sir Selvyn Walter and Sir Rupert ‘King Swallow’ Philo, a week apart this month.

Former parliamentarian, Sir Selvyn Walter’s funeral will be held on Monday, Oct, 12 at the Sir Vivian Richards Cricket Stadium at 10 am.

Sir Selvyn, the brother of the late former premier, Sir George Walter, who passed away on Sept. 14 at his residence at the age of 84, will be accorded an official funeral.

Ahead of his funeral next week, a  viewing, which will be opened to the public, will be held on Oct. 9.

The viewing of his body will take place at St. John’s Seventh Day Adventist Church from 10:30 am to 1 pm.

Sir Selvyn, who represented the St. John’s Rural West constituency, served in the Progressive Labour Movement administration from 1971 to 1976.

During this time, he held the ministerial portfolios of Economic Development and Tourism.

In 2013, he was knighted by the Government of Antigua and Barbuda during the country’s Independence celebrations. Meanwhile, an official funeral will be held for calypso legend, Sir Rupert ‘King Swallow’ Philo on Oct. 19, at the Sir Vivian Richards Cricket Stadium.

Sir Rupert died on Sept. 11 at the age of 78. King Swallow was one of the country’s top exponents of the calypso/ soca artform.

He became an international star having taken his jumpy soca hits and scintillating performances to countries around the world.
