DON’T   TAX   WOMEN   PADS

…..by  Audley Phillip

As the father of a teenage daughter,  I have had the distinct pleasure or the unfortunate role as some might  say,   of having to go to the supermarket or pharmacy to buy sanitary napkins or pads as we generally call them, for her.   I was and still am shocked at the cost for them and even moreso,  given that it is a commodity that women and girls must use monthly..

.Menstruation is a natural phenomenon for every young girl and adult woman and sanitary pads are a basic necessity of life.. The lack of affordability is making it difficult for girls, especially school girls and young unemployed women.  to buy and use them

Many school girls and unemployed young women are sometimes forced because of the lack of financial resources to find less than healthy ways to “”pad-up” during their monthly cycle.

There are  health implications for girls and young women who resort to the use of unhygienic menstrual products because sanitary pads are so expensive.

All sanitary  pads should be made affordable, accessible, and available to enable women and girls not to miss out on any educational and economic activities during their menstrual cycle.

Several studies have shown that  a good number of school girls from poor families  face great challenges to access the sanitary pads thus hampering their educational pursuits.

I am calling on the Government to ensure that all taxes and duties,   import and otherwise are completely removed from all women’s sanitary products thereby ensuring  a measure of  tax justice that does not cause a financial burden on poor women and girls  who have to put up  with the cost of buying pads for such a long period of their lives and at such exorbitant prices.

  1. There are affordable pads on the market. Most women just choose to purchase the brand name ones with exorbitant prices.

  2. You must teach them planning just like when they’re going to the fetes they can plan a 100% without you beside buying them a ticket maybe remind them of that buying the first one is no problem afterwards 5P my friend

  3. I agree with spliff 100% they can find money to go fete and buy outfit get nails done hair done n buy shoes they can afford to buy pads it’s a dam shame antiguans cry down their own country and people prices but can afford other things like fete n hair n nails oh please stop the bullshit now man

  4. @Just Saying – That’s a very sensitive area and some of the chemicals used to control the fluids can be irritant…so a lady has to be careful what she allows to go in her…

  5. @Spliffy leaks you have daughters right? I can guarantee you that the women and girls who have difficulties buying pads aren’t the ones flocking to these fetes. Many aren’t as lucky as you to be in high government position and raking in a stable monthly income. Have some damn compassion.

  6. @justsaying As one of those who have tried many brands- off brands and popular brands. After having gone through chemical burns and rashes from a lot of these off brands. I would continue to use the brand name ones.

I honestly believe items such has pass/sanitary napkins, toothpaste, toothbrush, toilet paper should not be taxes. Anything for hygiene should be tax free.

Yes there are a lot of alternatives but the alternative are not made properly. And other alternatives such as using a blood cloth may not be possible especially when you are at work.

  7. not jus period time but I gave birth not too long sgo an I use 5 pads so far,🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺
they shouldn’t tax it for real its wickedness
I seen even parents can’t buy pads for there teen daughter sometimes because i t go shorten there bus fair

  8. ABLP is to blame for the high cost, even brake pads for my ole corolla raise, all cricket pads raise, mouse pad, buffer pad, every pad gone up.

  9. some men wear pads too……..at least a so dem behave! always chatting, gossiping and know neargah bizniz……especially them in the barbershop a Friday time……worse than the 2 women cussing on Green Bay hill that obstinate sing about…….a dem day wear the most PADS. tax dem man day heavily!!!!

  10. Antigua and Barbuda should be a tax free jurisdiction from Saint John’s Harbour to English Harbour, and every citizen should be responsible to build their own roads, generate their own power, supply their own water and grow their own food. Then we will be living in Paradise

  11. @Islander I was referring to brands and you clarified the issue you have with some. I was in no way referring to blood cloths. Those don’t sound sanitary at all.
