Brothers Win Lions Club 5th Annual Golf Tournament

Brothers Omari and Demar James staved off a strong field of challengers to win the fifth annual Lions Club of Antigua Golf Tournament on Saturday.

The Cedar Valley Golf Course was the scene of excitement as more than 30 two-member mixed teams of men women and juniors contested the charity event.

This year’s competition was changed from the usual 18-hole scramble format to a front nine scramble followed by an alternate shot format on the back nine.

According to Omari, the older James and the reigning Antigua Open champion, the alternate shot format made the event extremely competitive.

The nation’s top golfer stopped short from claiming that the alternate shot format made the difference in taking the top prize, tickets to St.Kitts.

Demar is the top junior and one of the Nation’s top golfers as well.

“The alternate shot was always going to be a tough one for the teams and it was good to have Demar playing along with me.  “That surely was a plus,” the older James said.

The James’ finished the tournament with a gross score of 66, three shots ahead of the team of Vincent James, their father and Dion Massiah.

Tedson Weatherill and Curtis White finished third with a gross score of 74.

Former West Indies all-rounder Eldine Baptiste teamed up with veteran golfer Dougie O’Brien to take first net honours with Navin Singh and Ron Manser placing second net,

Wilson Charles and Hilroy Humphreys finished in the third net position.

In addition to the overall winners, there were a number of individual awards distributed throughout the various categories.

Mary Kinnell, O’Brien, Baptiste and Otis Thomas all received prizes for closest to the pin on the par threes.

For the longest drives, Mark Woodhouse (men) Baptiste (senior) Errol Hodge (super senior) and Kris Karmejian (ladies) took those awards.

The tournament, one of the many fundraisers put on by the Antigua Lions Club has steadily improved over the years.

“For the past five years we look forward to this event, which continues to grow,” said Lion George Roberts MJF, spokesperson of the organisation.

“We continue to work with our sponsors, especially our main sponsor Sun General Insurance without whom we could not have hosted this activity,” Roberts added.
