POINTE XPRESS- Barbuda is Scheduled to See Its First International Flight on Friday

The Immigration Department is mounting a training course for approximately twenty of its officers who will be based at the new international airport in Barbuda.

Chief Immigration Officer, Katrina Yearwood, said the department is running the training ahead of the first international flight that will land at the new airport on Friday.

“We have organized a brief refresher on customer service for the Barbuda team comprising of seasoned Immigration officers and new recruits. The sessions run for three days to include both theory and practical exercises.”

“Additionally, there will be a practice session on Thursday at the FBO in Barbuda to get the new recruits comfortable and ready to process passengers coming to Barbuda,” Yearwood explained.

She revealed that a larger and more holistic approach regarding customer service to include the entire department will take place in the new year.

“This ad hoc refresher has been designed primarily for the new recruits. Our hospitality consultant, Michael Eutrope, kindly agreed to provide the session to the Department of Immigration. I look forward to the more robust customer service training segment in the first quarter of 2025 that will also include other stakeholders,” Yearwood further explained.

Airport sources say the flight that is scheduled to arrive on Friday is not a commercial flight but one of many private jets that are expected in both Antigua and over in Barbuda during the upcoming holiday period.

  1. The Chief Immigration Officer should be terminated immediately for saying that Barbuda will have am international flight on Friday.

The Chief Immigration Officer ought to know that the flight MUST land in Antigua before going to Barbuda.

There can be NO direct flight to Barbuda unless it is an emergency landing.

The Chief Immigration Officer should be removed Immediately for misleading the public. And her lack of very basic airport regulations.

    • Where in the above article do you see a quote from the CIO stating that “an international flight…Barbuda…”????? You lack reading comprehension skills!

  2. I have been following the blogs primarily by naysayers regarding Barbuda and whether or not it s airport can be considered an international airport and it is obvious that many people do not understand what makes an airport international. Before going any further and this may very well help your thinking do you know why Ronald Reagan National Airport in DC is called a DOMESTIC airport and NOT INTERNATIONAL?

  3. @ Melchesidec I was taught in school that open and closed quotation marks (inverted commas) signify what a person ACTUALLY spoke. So …. where does the CIO make mention of an INTERNATIONAL flight?
You should think before you cast blame. YOU should be removed for trying to mislead other readers; do some refresher courses in English and stop lying.

  4. Clearly, @Melchesidec missed the point of the new Barbuda airport. It is an international airport capable of receiving flights from anywhere in the world without them having to stop in Antigua. Read the story again. That us why they have to train the immigration officers. If you have a problem with the Chief Immigration Officer, that’s your business, but if you are going to call her out for something, it should be based on something factual, not the ramblings of ignorant reader who failed to equip him/herself with the right information that has been out there for months.

Antigua News Room also has a responsibility to fact check these comments. People are allowed to put things that are widely inaccurate.

  5. The headline is very misleading. Taking private jets does not make an airport international. Maybe private jets can land anywhere they like.
No commercial jet except maybe liat is going to land in Barbuda.

Why would anyone argue with stupid people. It would not benefit you anything. Just remain who and what you are a stupid person.
